Amazon workers unite to Unionize! 👍

Can't understand why the company even resisted. Amazon must be making a killing already, especially during the pandemic -- home delivery of goods was always their business model.

In my book, union-busters are enemies of humanity, against whom any atrocity is morally acceptable.

Awesome! Amazon bosses can afford it....they need to get with the program.
Apparently you have not been paying attention. Amazon already pays premium wages in their wharehouses. The union will be unlikely to bring higher wages, but will be able to affect scheduling and work conditions. If, and it is a big if, A) the vote survives the appeal and B) the jobs aren't automated away

“Mr. Weil’s track record and previous statements are problematic for many West Virginia employees and business owners,” Manchin said in a Thursday statement. “Ultimately, I could not support Mr. Weil because I do not believe that the health and well-being of our small businesses and the employees who rely on their success would be his utmost priority.”

A spokesperson for Sinema told CNN that the lawmaker “has concerns” about Weil’s “ability to faithfully execute and uphold the law.” Kelly did not elaborate on his reasons for voting down the nomination.

Yeah, we have those two REpublicans who need to be driven out of the party and I guess we can spare this new guy for the moment. But Biden needs to flat out state that Manchin and Sinema can get with the deal or GTFO. Like support the primary challenger AND the moderate Republican (quietly) and if it comes down to MAnchin and a Republican support the Republican. End careers.

Small businesses should not be a labor secretary's first priority.

The decline of labor unions is on of the reasons for the growing income gap.During the 1950's one third of the work force belonged to labor unions. Now it is little more than ten percent.

A revival of labor unions will also be good for the Democrat party.

NPR did a deep dive into the Staten Island Union election yesterday. A LOT of things broke in favor of the workers (who appear to have won 58 percent "yes"). The geriatric fossils at the AFL-CIO and the Teamsters opted to sit this one out, because they didn't want to be associated with the long string of Amazon losses. So the workers tried to organize themselves independently (!!!) which is unheard of in this day and age. (Now of course the major unions want to affiliate with the victors). The warehouse is the largest of four servicing New York City, is huge in comparison to other Amazon centers (8000 employees) and has excellent transportation access in a key location. The company invested millions in robotics at the plant but robots cannot yet pick orders and wrap. The company pays well but unilaterally insisted on a "speed up" during the last Christmas season (higher performance goals for the same amount of money, forced overtime, etc). The sheer margin of victory makes a company appeal seem churlish.

"Speed up" also seems to be why Bessemer Alabama's Amazon center is holding a vote as well. The "no" vote is leading 52 percent to 48 percent but there are 400 contested ballots remaining to be counted pending a court order. They tried to unionize in 2020 and the "no" vote was 66 percent.
