How useful are these for an author?

What's a reasonable target for a first time author in erotica to hit or are they just meaningless anyway?

Not very except in a macro sense (something running consistently under 1,000 ranking is obviously selling better than something running consistently over the 3,000,000 ranking). But Amazon.com is only one sales point. It provides no useful pattern really on overall sales. If nothing else, different categories of books sell differently at the various different types of distribution points.
