I don't eat meat but I'm not officially a vegetarian cause I don't eat much vegetables either. Thank god for starches!

:D

Shame Starfish

A vegetarian using scare tactics to further their own agenda.
I could go through that article and point out all the inaccuracies and suppositions pulled from dubious sources. But the article is just too long and my eyes glazed over.

Latest statistics show that the "supposed" vcjd epidemic in the UK has peaked.

If you are worried about health risks, avoid minced products (eg burgers) that may contain materials from dubious parts.

There has never been anyone who has said that eating a proper joint of meat has carried any vcjd risk. If you buy cheap junk foods made up of minced unidentifiable materials, then you're obviously not that worried about your health.

Hope you eat some soy girl...... Where you gettin your protine from?

Oh, and I'll just say that you are still a vegitarian if you don't eat meat, but mainly only consume bread and starches.
That is if you don't consume gelatin, rennet, stocks and many other by-products.

:)

What agenda? I am not using scare tactics. I am posting information that came to me via a reliable friend. If this article holds falicies then that is not MY doing. I am merely sharing.
That is really pathetic that you'd place shame on me when you know little or nothing about my 'agenda'.

I can't believe that you'd think I am trying to scare people. What about all of the other posters here that post information that you can find 'out there' that may scare someone? Why aren't you shaming them? I am sorry if you think that I am out to scare people into being vegitarian, but you are dead fucking wrong. I've never once in my life tried to sway anyone out of or into a lifestyle. I am simply passing on information I've come across.

I am sick of being treated like this when ever I open my mouth or share anything about something that bothers me.

Fuck this, it's not worth it.

I don't expect everyone to agree with me, but disignating that I have a fucking agenda is ridiculous and mean. I am a caring person and wouldn't ever intentionally scare anyone.

I am fed the fuck up now.

Scare tactics are when you don't present the other side of the story, only your own. I can probably provide just as many scary facts about pesticides, etc. with regards to veggies and fruits, not to mention other facets of food preparation that you probalby don't want to hear about (I once had the fun task of destroing several tons of canned beans that had been contaminated with horse manure).

Anyone that has been in the food harvesting and preparation industry can tell you all kinds of scary and true tales about both meat and non-meat foods. Does that give us the big picture on meats vs. non-meat foods? No - not really.

I don't eat as much meat as I used to, and I do eat more veggies and fruits, but am I going to give up meat because of some one sided stories? No. You are welcome to your eating habits and I will continue mine - I just like meat too well, and I actually get rather sick from eating certain non-meat products (I have Celiac Synrome) while I cannot trace any of my ills directly to meat.

Yes - I agree; Shave the baby Soys! Have you ever seen how they harvest them - it is cruel and barbaric!

shaving soys?? are soys hairy? god.. and I thought they were bad AFTER they were "made" into fake hamburgers.. :D

Hey! Boca Burgers kick ass. Plus they keep well in the freezer, take only a few minutes to heat in the grill pan, and make for a cheap meal.

Aw damn Starfish, come back! I'll eat one of your Gardenburgers with ya'....can I have a bacon Gardenburger? with cheese?

I am sorry if I offended you too. I did not mean to - but I don't take back what I said about the content or my views thereof. I assumed you could handle a viewpoint in conflict with your own.

Moreover, I don't think claiming that a person has an agenda is mean or otherwise degrading; we all have agendas, and as long as we are honest and open about them then trying to persuade someone to your agenda is not a bad thing. I do think you had an agenda, a well meaning one, but an agenda nonetheless.

Come on back Starfish and give us what for - stand up for what you believe.

Starfish.

I meant agenda, in the way that as a vegetarian, you posted an article from a group actively campaigning for vegetarianism.
In the same way, that as a beef and sheep farmer I have an agenda in trying combat misinformation against my livelihood.
That article I thought carried a lot of false assumptions , but it's gone now anyway so " shrugs".

Of course there are health problems with any food if it's not prepared properly (e coli, salmonella etc). The answer is to care about what you eat. Buy on quality, not because it's the cheapest. You may complain about what your food bill comes to. But you spend a smaller proportion of your income on food than any generation before you. All due to the intensification of farming. If you don't like it, buy organic, free range or farm assured. The consumer is King. We can only sell what you want to buy. All the messages we're getting, is that you want to buy as cheaply as possible.
The strategy "Pile it high, sell it cheap. " is what packs people into the supermarkets.

Goodness, Starfish! you ok, hon? I'll become a vegitarian, I promise I will! :D

I'm an omnivore. I've always been an omnivore. I come from a long line of omnivores. I like to kill my helpless plants, skin them and dress them for eating. I've done the same to my meat. I am an omnivore.

Vegetarians are very happy as vegetarians. Vegans love being vegans. Us omnivores are very happy as omnivores. We should all stand in a large circle around our campfire. We can have hotdogs, bocaburgers, real steak and soy steak, regular smores and soy s'mores. We can sing Kumbaya. Or maybe we could sing something with sexual overtones instead.

The point is that if we're happy with our particular 'arian, then that's good enough. No one lives forever. Some people need to watch their dietary intake for health purposes, but others don't.

People have a choice of what they eat, and it should fit their lifestyle. I’m a vegetarian and have been one since the mid eighties. I made this decision for philosophical and health reasons, and I stick by them. There have been many studies that show that a vegetarian diet is healthy and can reduce many common life threatening diseases. I grew up in a small farming community and many of my friends families were and still are farmers. In my opinion the biggest threat to family farms is not vegetarians like my self but agribusiness (but that is a whole other thread). If you eat meat fine that’s your choice, if you’re a veg, that’s fine too. Do what you want.

how about this:

I do not eat identifiable body parts - no ribs, no drumsticks, no wings, no necks, no tongues...nothing that looks like any body part I have or anything my pets have.

The only meat I'll eat is chicken breast, and yes I know that sounds a little odd after what I just said. But, somehow that doesn't bother me. I have trouble with milk too, the whole idea of what it is and where it came from. I know I'm not alone in this.

No, I won't eat hotdogs or sausage or anything like that. Maybe they don't put the ears and toes and eyeballs in that anymore, but who knows?

I eat a lot of tofu. I eat veggies and I eat beans. I also eat organic food, but thats another story.

Starfish, eat what you want to eat for whatever reasons work for you. I'm happy and you should be to with whatever you choose to eat.

I'm not a vegan but I like the word Tofutte.

Tofutte.

Tofutte. Tofutte. Tofutte!

TOOOOOOOOE
FUUUUUUU
TEEEEEEEEEE!

~~~~~~~~~~ :cool: ~~~~~~~~~~~
This meaningless stuff brought to you by frozen bean curd. It's better than you think.
Starfish, my love i do like vegetables. But, baby i just gotta have my beef steak. medium well. if barbequed so much the better.
i love fish also!:)
This fish needs munched on. ;)
Okay, well, this thread can take shape into the archives, or it can be about eating food and what you folks are into.
For the record, I have no personal issues with others eating habits or choices, and never have. I am a biology student, among many other things, and I am interested in pathology and the causes and controls of it. I am also interested in what people think, so I am not offended by the opinions of others.
However, I would appreciate it from now on if someone wishes me to read their words and understand their perspective too, that I not be spoken to in a manner that reproaches me. I have an inferiority complex about that sort of thing. I think I deserve that respect. It has happened a lot by other members here at lit, to me, whether they meant to or not, and it hurts my self esteem, because I base myself esteem on that of what those I respect think and say of me. Actually there isn't a person out there that doesn't matter to me, even the bad ones.
Thank you for those who are trying to understand.
I need a break.
I, too, eat only pussy pot pie but wouldn't mind my first cock sausage. I haven't eaten any animal flesh in nearly 30 years. I stopped the day after reading a powerful article called "Drugs in the Meat Industry" in the old Ramparts magazine. I try not to be preachy about it but I know that my health wouldn't be as good if I'd been a flesh eater all these years. If anyone around Milwaukee is serving cock sausage, kindly let me know.
