I have a pet peeve, and it's something that's been bugging me for ages. This evening I phoned a colleague, only to be told by her roommate that she was "laying in bed".

Laying what? An egg?

Isn't "lay" the past tense of "lie"? Why does this simple distinction seem to have vanished from the English language? Worse still, sometimes I feel the odd one out when I say "lie".

Am I on my own out here? :(

ROFL Laying lying, liing? I am the last to know, but LOL. This should get it in my brain. D I think, and speaking why I use it inappropraitely, people use it because they want to be differentiated from saying someone is a liar. But it would be good to know the past, present and future tense of this word :D.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

But I drive Carson nuts when I incorrectly use it in a sentence. :D

It's all explained in my HowTo entry: "The Correct Use Of Lay/Lie."

I'd lay her, if she'd just lie down........

Makes sense to me....

LAY: to put down, a transitive verb
Present Tense: LAY
I lay my wife's favorite dildo on the bedstand before I leave on a business trip, so she feels less lonely.

Present Participle: LAYING
The Domme, while carefully laying the school girl uniform on the bed for her sub to wear for the initiation ceremony, discovered at that moment she had a fetish for plaid.

Past Tense: LAID
I laid a crack on the little slut's bare butt with the riding crop before she could orgasm.

Past Participle: LAID
Had he laid the requirement out for him more clearly, he would have chosen to write the Group Sex story.

LIE: to recline, an intransitive verb
Present Tense: LIE
My wife lies in bed with her favorite dildo, no longer caring if I come home from a business trip.

Present Participle: LYING
Lying in the tub, legs spread wide, the sub waited with soap and washrag for her early morning golden shower from her Domme.

Past Tense: LAY
They lay in this sweaty, contorted maze of arms and legs, fucking and sucking and licking before I had a chance to join (damn).

Past Participle: LAIN
The Gay Sex manuscript has lain in the closet all these years gathering dust.

A linguist would say "laying" as in refering to "lying" would not be wrong, despite the grammarian clucking his tongue. As long as you understand what the person is saying, it is correct.

Yeah. But when you use the wrong form people sometimes call you a "crude mofo." I hate it when they do that!

Subscribing to thread for future reference.

No matter how many times I learn it, I always seem to forget it.

Only cruel mojos say that.

The butchery of the English language is an irritation to me as well. I don't expect perfect grammar, but I'd still like for people to have a basic grasp of it. Would be nice if more people actually gave a shit about spelling, too.

 I have some converts!!!!! :D This has made my day! :rose: Here's wishing you all the most fantastic orgasm in the next couple of days!
