Sunday Halloween Irks Some in Bible Belt
[rant mode ON]

Okay, I'm not Pagan. I was raised Old Anglican (think Catholic lite here). I realize that trick or treating is a secular thingie, and it has little to do with the Pagan Samhain, but the whole idea of moving someone's holiday cause it conflicts with the majority is wrong! What's next? Do we force Muslim person's to change Ramadan when it overlaps with Christmas? Or do we only change it in the areas where Christians are the majority? I read somewhere the the largest group of Muslims outside of the Middle East is somewhere in Michigan. In their case, would the Christians be forced to move Christmas since they're not the local majority? Or when Channukah overlaps Christmas, do we have a winner take all grudge match about who gets custody of December 25th?

I know it's kind of silly to be offended, since Samhain isn't "my" holiday, and because folks who do celebrate are going to do it whenever they please (and because I do know some Wiccans who move the actual celebration to the nearest full moon anyway) and screw the Bible Belt anyway, but I find the intolerence of it all to be offensive. hops off the soapbox and puts it away [Rant mode OFF]

Catholics ARE the devil!

You'd be surprised how many Protestants in the South (United States) don't believe that Catholics are Christian. A Catholic friend of mine was when her boyfriend's mother took a month to decide she was a Christian after being told that she was Catholic.

No, I wouldn't be surprised at all. I'm quite familiar with the "protestant vs. catholic" arguments. Of course, throw in the orthodox just to muddy the waters! And then the offshoots like LDS, JW, etc. I think Christians spend more time denouncing each other than anyone else!

It's iritating but very typical around here. Our neighborhood decided to celebrate Halloween Saturday. Of course we already had plans for that night, so I've gotta look for somewhere else I can take my son to get his candy fix.

Ok, so if these people believe that halloween is satanic, then why is it ok to celebrate it at all? Is it only ok to be satanic Mon - Sat?

And on my own little rant, techincally the lords day is SATURDAY. That was the seventh day. It was a person, not God, who changed it to sunday. I guess the idea was that since Jesus rose on a Sunday . . . you get the idea. Anyway that's my little rant.

Also, KC, that's why halloween is called all hallows EVE. Rather like Christmas Eve. :)

if celebrating halloween on sunday is going to "confuse" all the townspeople into worshiping the devil, then perhaps they were'nt that promising of a bunch to begin with.

In my former home-town, Halloween was rarely "celebrated" on the 31st anyway - usually on a Friday or Saturday night, no matter what day of the week it actually fell on - that way, no one year was singled out, and kids (in theory) weren't out all hours on a school night.

as a christian i want to say i find this stuff beyond mundan. let the kids go out and have fun. no matter what day hollowen falls on. remember people that christmas and easter are also pagan holidays,.

I'm a christian, too, and I agree. I was just saying that people like that bug me. They feel that halloween is satanic, but it's ok as long as it's not sunday. That is so hypocitical. Now, me personally, I believe that people should worry more about their daily worship of the tv god, but . . . Either way, i bet they're the king of people who get drunk everynight, but they're good christians, cause they go to church and keep the sabath holly. Jesus had a couple of words for people like them, and they were viper and hypocrite. They're just pharasees.

It has also been changed to Saturday here.

I figured it would, I mean, if the Fourth of July falls on a Sunday, the celebration falls to the Saturday before also.

*shrug*

Quotable, truly.

In England celebrating halloween is not a big thing but in Scotland it is mega.

Ironically several english people I know think the celebrations for halloween are an American thing, like McDonalds

As for the Caotholics V Protestants try living this close to Northern Ireland

My cousin is a Scotsman who has tattoos of UDR (Ulster Defence) when he was ranting about Catholics (they should all die etc) I pointed out HE had been baptised Catholic !!!

He didn't know!!

Hell that confused Him. Made me laugh til I cried.

Needless to say he won't speak to me at all now. Wonder why  lol

I think we should live and let live.
If people want to celebrate then let them if not thats ok to.

Dec 25th is a pagen thing. I seem to remember that Jesus was actually born Feb time but as no-one knew the dat they changed to 25/12 which was alreadty a celebration day.

Anyone else hear that?

Actually a lot of our religious holidays have been paganized. Yes, Jesus was born in the spring. Back during the time that they were 'converting' the celts, they were having problems, cause the celts had a celebration ever winter and spring (winter and summer solstice), and they were refusing to give up their holiday. So the church made the holidays of that day have spiritual meaning (Christmas and Easter). Another thing about Christmas is the tree. It used to be, that the Germans (I think it's the Germans) would worship the tree during 'Christmas', and put candles on it, and decorations. So it's been added to our celebration. And I'm pretty sure their's no mention of Santa Clause in the bible.

As for Easter, what's up with the bunny? If Easter is the celebration of Jesus rising from the dead . . . The truth of the matter is that bunnies, eggs, and spring represent fertility. They were all part of the Spring Solstice celebration, in the hopes that it would bring fertility to the crops and women. We just added the bit about Jesus rising, and started having the celebration about the time that Jesus would have risen.

Ok, now that everyone's eyes are twirling, you may go back to your regular scheduled programming. :D
