Icelandic Alternative Beauty Contest To Challenge Ideals
Updated:2007-03-04 09:00:00 MYT

ICELAND: An alternative beauty pageant to be held in a remote Icelandic town will reward contestants' wrinkles, saggy breasts and other bodily imperfections and hopes to challenge Western ideas of beauty, organisers said on Wednesday.

"Anyone can make the rules about what beauty is, we want to change the rules," one of the contest's organisers, Matthhildur Helgadottir, told AFP.

"We think it's just coincidence if you have big breasts. How come this is beautiful? We are trying to show how ridiculous this is," Helgadottir said.

The contest, scheduled for April 18, will be held in the town of Isafjoerdur, population 3,000, in the northwest of Iceland.

Men and women were welcome to register as contestants and while there was a minimum age of 20, there was no upper age limit.

The only other stipulation was that contestants had not gone under the plastic surgeon's knife for cosmetic reasons.

Prizes were as yet undecided but the "fun and honour" of taking part would be sufficient reward for contestants, according to Helgadottir.

Organisers remained undecided on how to rate participants.

"Maybe this (the alternative contest) is research, a way of understanding them (beauty pageants)."

The idea for the contest emerged while Helgadottir - a self-confessed feminist - was talking with friends in an Isafjoerdur pub.

As of Wednesday five people, three women and two men, had registered to take part.

Helgadottir remained optimistic that many more would sign up once news of the competition spread. (AFP)

Ok, discussion.

Is there something, some physical detail, outside of the "mainstream" concept of beauty that you find attractive? Any by that I don't mean anything oustide of model strerotype. Instead, something that most people wouldn't think about as either good or bad, or even find unattractive, but that you like extra much.

Personally, I'm a fan of noses. I like it when it's one that stands out as different. So, noses of unusual shapes. Slightly crooked, slighly pointy, uppity, wider than usual, whatever. It'slike a mnemonic handle, right there in the middle of the face. It interrests me for reasons I can't quite explain.

Oh I like this. I wonder if they will post pictures?

I like the idea.

Interesting concept. I hope they succeed.

How about a sexy tooth gap a la Lauren Hutton?

As odd as it may seem at first the odd scar is a great thing to see. Why? Because they show the person has lived.

My wife has a couple of them, as do I. Our best friend also has some.

Great idea.

As for what I like outside the 'norm', intelligence. That won't show up well on the Tube though. ;)

A while ago, I started a thread: Slightly Strange Turn-Ons, there is quite a lot of stuff there on the way people dress, features, etc.

As for the contest itself, I find the concept assinine. A contest by definition has some figure of merit by which the contestants are judged and ranked. This contest has no criteria, so how would it be possible to judge? This isn't an ugly contest, or a personality contest, it's a who doesn't fit in this category contest.
