I've seen countless numbers of topics addressing the issue about "troll control" and different theories or solutions to discouraging "troll topics"...
I've seen a number of ideas to combat trolls including...
Ignore them...That hasn't worked...
Harrass them...That hasn't worked...
Don't mention their names...Doesn't work...
Don't post to them or about them...Nope, doesn't work...
Don't click on their posts...Don't work...
Bury their topics by posting new ones...Spamming the board doesn't work...
Now I see a new trend that is plain stupid and destined for failure...The trend being, lets derail their topics so they will stop posting them...Seriously folks, thats about as childish as sticking your fingers in your ear and screaming, "I can't hear you, I can't hear you", over and over again...
You can't derail a topic to begin with...No matter what you respond to the topic with, the topic hasn't changed a bit and is still there for anyone to read...You can derail the responses but the topic remains the same...The author of a topic is posting a question, a comment, or an opinion, about something and once you read the topic the author has accomplished their goal...The author had something to say and you read it...
Personaly, I will read the initial topic and not bother reading the replies unless the thread consists of replies about the topic...Derailing a topic benefits the "troll"...You keep selling the trolls topic and it remains at or close to the top of page 1...Once again, people will see the topic, see alot of replies, click on the topic, read the topic, realize the topic has been spammed with useless replies and go read a different topic...
Derailing threads with nonsense also hurts everyones topics...Nonsense replies only breed more nonsense replies and pretty soon you will have a GB full of garbage because you thought it would help control the trolls...Everytime you post a topic to counteract the trolls you only make the troll population increase...
Derailing threads actualy encourages the trolls to post even more topics...The troll has done his job if they can get you to reply...When you waste time derailing troll topics, you aren't responding to topics posted by non-trolls...Mission accomplished, you have wasted your on-line posting time replying to topics with gibberish thinking to yourself that you have defeated the troll...
You people have to decide for yourself what kinda GB you want...You can have a GB filled with good discussion or you can have a GB filled with pages of trash...The trolls are trying to turn the GB into trash and derailing topics only helps them, not discourage them...
