All things British

I could google this but I'd rather have some real people's recipe's... for Shepard's Pie. It just seems more authentic to me.

Would anyone mind sharing with me?

Bob's Your Uncle!

I used to have a copy of this book that mysteriously disappeared off my bookshelf one day. I know my teenager took it, and it was never seen again. But it explained a lot of words and phrases that we always hear and it was a lot of fun.

I don't think I have ever tasted a leek. Do they really have an onion flavor?

Yes they are like giant spring onions...but I find them gritty unless they are really, really well washed

It seems the little green ones are causing e coli here. And they do not know why? Perhaps their employees do not wash their their hands properly.

:rose: It is so sad John Inman died today. He was gay and portrayed it proudly in his work decades before it became fashionable and heroic. The British entertainment industry will miss him I'm sure, as will his adoring public, and for much more than his most famous line 'I'm free!!'.

What's eggy bread?
Is it like our french toast?

It was mentioned in a movie I saw recently and keep meaning to ask someone...

Hi ADR :rose:

I think so, its bread dipped in egg, butter and milk (though some people opt for either milk or butter rather than both I think) and then fried.

I think it is bread that pushes boundaries and tests limits.

Hey, thanks.

Yep that's the same thing, then. I figured so.

Anybody like The IT Crowd? (asks the sci-fi, geeky girl)

Now going back to look through this thread to see what you all came up with. I do love the British mysteries, romance, etc. :rose:

I haven't heard about The IT Crowd, now I have to go look it up!

I always wonder this: When I watch Midsomer Murders and they investigate all these murders in little, quaint, rural villages... is that what they really look like? Is most of the rural areas of Britain like the scenes depicted on that show? If that's how it really looks, boy would I love to live there.

I'm also amazed at how they found so many really neat, art deco places to film the Poirot series. They are so authentic to the period.

LOL...I remember one of the Midsomer Murders when the inspector's wife was considering moving to Midsomer and the inspector basically said "Why would I want to live here? People get murdered here every week!"

But I would love to live in a quaint little village too, sans murders of course. ;)

Well, I know you're a sci-fi guy which IT isn't, but if you are a computer geek or know one you might appreciate the show. Besides the humor is hilarious and it's written by the same person who did Father Ted I think (another irreverant British show).

Lots of the more rural areas do look like that.

Suffolk and Norfolk on the East Coast as well as Yorkshire (north England) Devon and Cornwall (south England) all have those type of villages.

I am sure other areas in the west do as well, but I am not too familiar with that area.

Come and see :)

I was in England in August and saw The It Crowd. It was hysterical. Is there any way to watch it in the US?

I'm also a big fan of Dr. Who, Poirot, and Midsommer Murders. Kudos to A&E, Biography, and BBCA for bringing us Brit shows!

A lot of the cast from The IT Crowd were also in Garth Merengue's Dark Hour (or something like that, I forget the exact title), which is possible the stupidest programme ever and shouldn't be funny, but yet somehow is.

Yeah, maybe I'm the only person in the world who actually watched it, come to think of it...
