I found this book by Cormac McCarthy on the shelves over at Saint Pia Zadora Thrift Shoppe. It won some awards but the reviews didnt impress me much, still I bought the book and added it to my stack of books to read.

In a nutshell: Three teens ride their horses to Mexico for an adventure. Yawn.

If you read NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN or BLOOD MERIDIAN, this one is the same stuff. Great story, excellent composition and prose, and constant tension. On a deeper level its a fugue with the basic ways people complicate their lives via personal demons, friends, girls, immaturity, and ignorance. The boys find lotsa trouble, and none of them escapes serious damage.

McCarthy, of course, never uses quotation marks.

No country was excellent. The Road not so much...made me wonder it the Pulitzer was for his body of work.

Been meaning to get to Blood Meridian.

I'll add All the Pretty Horses to the list...It was adapted to a 2000 movie that I never saw.

PRETTY HORSES surprised me, I was thinking bland and sentimental, and its a good mix of action, brutality, nostalgia, and growing up. I imagine the movie used older characters to make the tale plausible.

BLOOD MERIDIAN is over the top, so steel yourself for the degenerate violence and brutality.
