All that was heard around lunch time in work was the gnashing of teeth, and I was loving it.
The other day I started in on a project of love. I parboiled half a dozen racks of Beef Short Ribs in my special seasoning mix. AS I pulled them out of the pot after the alloted amount of time I rubbed them with more of the spice mix. (Garlic, Onion, Sea Salt, Dried Crushed Ancho Chili's and of course Paprika.)
Yesterday morning I started smoking them. A nice long slow smoke over Hickory Wood Chips.
The racks were pulled and cut up then chilled.
This afternoon when it was coming up to lunch time I went out to the car and came back with a rather large Ice Chest which was of course filled with the ribs. IN a bag were bottles of BBQ Sauce and Hot Sauce.
The others didn't see me come in with the cooler. They didn't see me heating the ribs in the Nuke but they sure did smell them. (I made sure to grab a coule of ribs for myself and my wife before I stepped outside the breakroom door and announced that lunch was on. When I told them what the lunch was there was a rush for the breakroom. The only ones left on the floor, other than the patients, were myself and the M.D. doing rounds. (He hadnt heard the Chow Call.)
I delivered the ribs to my wife as the Charge Nurse made sure the M.D. was fed. By the time I had finished my ribs and taken care of a patient the vultures were gathering. These are the people from the other units that always seem to hear about it when we get food. They love to slide in, load up with food and slide back out leaving us with nothing but the mess. This time though they were highly disapointed and a couple of them were a bit angry. They wanted to know why we hadn't saved them any. (I kept asking them we should have saved them some, they never contribute, they just take.)
That's right, eight people consumed six complete racks of Beef Short Ribs. For a while all you could hear on the floor was the gnashing of teeth as people stuffed themselves.
