If you are one of the many here who have more than one name....do me a favor: Save all of your clever/intelligent/witty remarks and only post them under one name.

I've recently taken to banishing a multitude of names which are obviously "alts" to the Ignore list - and I'd hate to miss anything terribly important or pressing that you may have to say.

That said though, I can see some valid reasons for having an alt.

There have been times when people have posted under unregistered, or an alt, because they wanted to talk about something they didn't want associated with their screen name. Usually something tragic like rape or maybe they did something they aren't proud of and confessing to strangers makes them feel better.

I think I remember someone using an alt once to talk about illness because they didn't want to be flooded with sympathetic pm's from people and just didn't want everyone knowing they were sick. Or maybe a family member was sick. Either way, that seems pretty legit to me.

Only three things bother me about Alts: When people use them to troll others or post nasty things they don't have the balls to associate with their regular name, when people behave like assholes and then change their names so they don't have to deal with the repercussions of their own shit, and when people constantly change their names so that no one can put them on ignore and they can engage people in arguments who would otherwise just ignore them.

If anyone has an alt, and there are more than just a few, honestly...it doesn't bother me in the least. I don't come here for anything more than to relax, kill time, and yeah, I have made a few 'friends' that I talk to away from here. Some have alts, some don't, nearly all could care less about the whole alt issue. And as you stated, as 'adults' I feel and I'm sure that some do as well, that there are more things in this world to worry about.

Maybe if you think they have an alt, just ask them privately. People have them for many reasons, you may not get an answer, but then again, maybe the reason you seek, isn't something you should concern yourself with. Trust may be a big thing with some people, others could probably care less.

You have to remember, alot of us aren't supposed to be here. Sometimes, people let out our personal information either on board or in PM and that can lead to someone (and has!) getting an alt or leaving the board all together...and why should anyone leave because of someone else's lack of respect for privacy?

Another reason that comes to mind is that maybe some people aren't comfortable with their 'sexual' persona being associated with their more 'social' persona. If you had a fetish you wanted no one to know about, why wouldn't you create an alt?

My defense for the alt bearing people is this...it's a personal choice, for personal reasons. No one has to like it, support it or condone it. But if you tell everyone that has an alt to fuck off, then you could possibly be missing out on some interesting people in the long run....and not everything that is done is life, needs to be explained...some things, just aren't anyone else's business.

Bent - I hope you don't mind me clipping pieces of your reply to respond to. I'm not nearly as clever as some around here who have the ability to put their replies directaly in a person's quote....so this will have to suffice for now.

1. There is no question here that there are a vast number of issues that are more pressing than one's alts. I never proclaimed that this was on my "Top 10" things that is wrong with the world. Lit is...and only ever has been...nothing but a plesant diversion from everyday life for me. A way to spend some time with like-minded people and enjoy some banter. Simple enough.

2. People who don't care about Trust are the very people I don't trust. It is a HUGE issue for me. I don't care for fake people in real life...why would I tolerate them here? I see it this way: The only currency we have online are our words. We can be who we *want to be and pretend to be actors, or...we can be who we truly are. The very way we are in real life. The fact that we are online should change this, in my eyes. If you are fake or lie in real life...or online...there is no difference to me.

3. If I had a fetish I didnt' want anyone to know about...I'd not be online "Chatting" about it. But..that's just me.

4. You're right. I could miss out on some things...but the people I do choose to associate with will be more cherished than those of whom I cannot place any trust in. As far as "some things not being anyone else's business".....well, my only answer to that is...when they post it on an open forum such as Lit...it then becomes other people's business. If you want it to remain a secret...then keep your mouth shut about it. (Again..just my take on things)
