There is a handshake deal in place that upon successful passing of the referendum the US will extend the new nation of Alberta a $500 billion line of credit secured by their oil reserves. This gives Alberta significant leverage in negotiations with Ottawa.

If Alberta does split I wouldn't be surprised if Quebec tried to do the same. Also, if Alberta leaves you can expect Saskatchewan to follow.

All of those threats the Quebecios made were designed solely for the purpose of squeezing more money out of Ottawa, political extortion as it were.

The equation gets more complicated with Alberta's potential withdrawal, a good chunk of the money used to pay off Quebec will no longer be there.

And make no mistake, Alberta is going to use this to leverage Ottawa. And Ottawa will make some mealy mouthed concessions and will try to coerce the citizens of Alberta. Then it will depend on how much the citizens of Alberta trusts Ottawa.

I've heard of Quebec nationalism, but never heard before of any Alberta secessionist movement.

It's long and complicated but it basically stems from the (very Broady speaking) idea that Alberta oil industry is unfairly treated by the federal government. Add in the fact that many Albertans self align with US politics there's some who don't just want to be seperate from Canada but rather American

There’s still a bit of a process to go through before it gets to that point.

They've cleared the legal hurdles to get it on a ballot. The next hurdle is petition signatures and then it goes up for a vote.
