On "nextdoor.com" this morning for my 'hood.

"We have a very large brown bear roaming our neighborhood and destroying dumpsters."

I looked and it's at least 20 blocks from my house.

And, we don't leave shit outside for bears to get into.

Makes good chili, too.

Is that so? They don't serve moose chili where I come from. I have had bear bacon, alligator, octopus, eel...uhm...probably other unique stuff, too, but I can't recall them at the moment.

When I was a kid, our freezer was stuffed with moose, caribou, and salmon. That was most of the protein we had for the winter. If you didn't get a moose in hunting season, it was going to cost a lot to feed the family over the winter.

Wow, I never knew it could be such a staple. I would think Caribou would taste gamey. That's one reason Im not fond of deer. Maybe I've just never had good quality game meat before.

Caribou does taste a bit gamier than moose. Still, it's "what's for dinner" and what people grew up with. Generally, the bigger the animal, the less gamy the meat, with exception of coastal blacktail deer who eat a lot of kelp off the beach. There are people that go through great pains to cook game in some special way, say they have a "special moose roast" recipe. We always just used it as meat.

And from last night on nextdoor.com: "Watch your dogs, spotted a couple of wolves in drive way (old seward highway - just past the new seward highway overpass)."

This is a bit closer to my house.

A Land Cruiser
(before Toyota wrecked them !! )

On the Permanente Trail just past King River. Note that the cruiser is not stock, as it has a spring over axle conversion in order to turn the big tires and have a bit more flex.
