He had time to text he was being chased by a bear?! Always figured it was chance encounters not actually being stalked and hunted down. Unless very sick bear unable to feed proper. No spray? I thought most of you didn't leave the house without it, outside of town anyways.

Assuming you don't need you don't need bear spray outside of town gets you dead apparently. When in Ontario's near north I ALWAYS have a noise maker, typically all you need here. And that is just for black bears!
 
Should have said, "or make noise'. Watched a hunting show were the guide went in days ahead of the shooter to track a bear and place the ambush. One bear caught his scent. Holy fuck can they run fast, in opposite direction. It was still looking over it's shoulder a quarter mile away.

Even when surprised black bears are rarely dangerous. They're not griz sized.

Shame kid died! More education all around?

If it's a black bear, you are supposed to fight for your life. If a brown/grizz, you are supposed to play dead.

Bears just happen.
 
Never run! Prey runs! Cougars, coyotes, wolves and black bears stand your ground. Grizz, hope it is not hungry. Polar bear kiss your ass goodbye. I do believe that polar bears sit above us on the food chain.
