The sky above everyone shined a very deep blue with not a cloud in the sky around everyone looking up. Looking down, there were many clouds as people were walking on top of them. This was the scene. The imagery of what people see when after light comes to take their lives and glance into the other side. This was the scene for Joe Baldwin as he stood in line waiting for something to happen. It was just a few hours ago... maybe it could have been a few minutes or even a few weeks ago? He could not remember how long it he stood in this line. Time seemed to be warped up here on this magical cloud but he could not wait to get processed through to what he hoped was heaven.
Joseph Baldwin, or Joe as he liked to be called, stood now at 5 feet 10 inches tall. He was lanky by most male standards... boney and skinny would be words that would give him a generous description of his body. He had short cropped brown hair that was balding at the top but if anyone looked at him in his eyes, he would give the illusion that he had a full head of hair. Looking from behind him told a different story. There was a huge bald spot on the back of his head that started to spread from the top to about halfway down his head. Right now, his looks were the least of his concerns. Getting through this long line of people was what he was wishing for... and the sooner the better.
Again, he did not know how long he stood in line, but finally, he was just one person away from being to the front. To his left, he could see a tall man standing behind a large podium, reciting some bits and pieces about the other people's past lives. If anyone were to look like Merlin from the Robin Hood fame of books and stories, this guy at tat the podium would be an exact replica without the long tall hat that Merlin made famous. Time seemed to slow down as Joe kept waiting and waiting until finally, the woman in front of him simply vanished, like she was being dropped.
Now, it was his turn to see 'Merlin' as he stepped close to the podium. It took no time at all as 'Merlin' flipped his pages and found the right one to him. "Joseph Baldwin. 25 years old, born on August 6th and lead a VERY privileged childhood. It was so privileged that everything was handed down to you by your parents. Am I right so far?" He asked with a gruff sounding voice.
Joe could not believe what he was hearing. Everything that 'Merlin' was saying was true. His parents were very rich and gave him everything that he ever wanted. To some people, he became a spoiled brat and treated money like it was paper. He spent it all frivolously and didn't care about it costing him a dime. Listening to 'Merlin', he decided to keep his rich attitude afloat. "Yes... Mom and Dad will get me out of here. They can buy anything... including getting me out. I need a phone. I have to call them to get me out of here." Joe pleaded in his hopes as he heard laughter from 'Merlin'.
"Your parents are not going to buy you out of this situation, young man." 'Merlin' admitted as he flipped a page. "Your parents are reading though the Facebook comments now on your social media site." He flips another page in his book as he reads the main story. "Young Joe Baldwin gets what he deserves as he is plowed by a runaway garbage truck. Good riddance of a spoiled brat." He clears his throat as he reads some more. "That was from Angel Fire. Another comment... Too snobby for me. He didn't give a damn about me. Money is the only thing he is good for. Take his money away and let’s see him survive in the real world. He’s such a loser. That's from Lina717. I can read more but they are all about the same." He admitted, looking at Joe with a calm face.
Joe could not believe what he was hearing, especially from his so-called friends and family. Angel Fire was actually his sister Angel. He thought that he could trust her with his secrets but Angel was showing her true colors and seeing through the illusion that his money brought to the table. The same could be said for Lina717... who was actually Carolina, The girl that he was so head over heels for before he died. If the rest of the comments indicated anything, they would show that he was a snobbish asshole who let his money do the talking for him. Taking very deep breaths, Joe started to finally calm down. "Yeah... I loved money. I had a lot of it. I had women all of the time, whenever I wanted but now... where the hell am I anyways?" He asked as his train of thought derailed to assess the situation in front of him.
'Merlin' let out a loud laugh as he looked behind him. "Young Joe, you are at the entrance to the 'Pearly Gates.' Some call it Heaven, others have different names. Once you enter here, your soul is in bliss for all eternity." He lets out a small 'ah-hem' as he looks like he is clearing his throat before he explains further. "Judging from what I see in the book, you just don't qualify so I see only one choice... It’s to go down below. Do you have any last words?" He asked.
Joe was petrified. He was going to Hell! How could he have been so self-centered? Those thoughts raced through his mind as he was about to open his mouth. Starting to let out his first word, he was interrupted by a hand by 'Merlin' while hearing the sounds of the song "Angel" by Aerosmith.
'Merlin' shook his head as he picked up the small device and spoke. "Yes, Your Eminence... He is not worthy but... Are you sure, Your Eminence?" Both 'Merlin' and Joe could hear a loud voice that was female in tone and sounded very angry but calm. The voice lasted only a couple of seconds before 'Merlin' came back onto the device. "I'm sorry, your Eminence. I can never doubt you.... If you have faith of him, than yes, I will do as told... Your Eminence is most wise. I will never forget that." The talking ended as 'Merlin' set the device down onto the podium and faced Joe one more time. "It seems that the... Higher being is giving you one more chance to redeem yourself. I don't know what SHE sees in you but there must be some good inside of you." He let out a sigh as he looked at Joe.
"SHE? Who is SHE?" Joe asked, looking very confused for a bit.
'Merlin' let out a small laugh. "You mortals refer to HER as God... the all knowing, the all mighty. What the world doesn't know is that what you always thought of GOD being male is far beyond the truth. HE is actually SHE. How do you think that SHE has spared the lives of so many throughout the centuries? It’s because SHE is a woman... and women know how to use their perception better than... ahem.... men. SHE sees, SHE knows, SHE embraces everyone and everything... and SHE is giving you a second chance."
Joe's mouth just gaped wide open. He could not believe what he was hearing. Inside, he was feeling like he was in heaven. If only he could say the right things instead of succumbing to the money, than he could be a better person... or so he thought. "You gotta be shitting me, really?" He asked, feeling very excited about the prospect to come.
"No shitting you. You get a second chance. There is a catch though." 'Merlin' mentioned as he could hear his alarm. "No time to tell you what the catch is. All I can say now is you have to find someone. You will know when you find that person. You will feel it. Good luck in your new life!" He felt very rushed but there was a line forming beyond the next cloud and he needed to keep up with his quota. With a whisk of his hand, Joe vanished from the cloud floor.
The flash of Light that Joe saw in his eyes when he died reappeared for only a short bit before fading away. Opening his eyes, he felt very groggy and disoriented. Looking around his surroundings, he could see that he was in an alleyway between buildings. The stench of a large dumpster nearby confirmed that he was back on Earth and in the world of the living... but where? Looking around, he let out a loud sigh. "Joe, you screwed up.... wait a minute!" He shouted as he was hearing a voice that was certainly not his own. It was much higher pitched and felt like a song. "WHO... oh...GOD! You didn't... did you?" He asked as he started to move his hands towards his chest. Where it was flat before now had small breast, about a B cup size. Though they were not big, they certainly did feel pleasing. "Oh GOD, you have a sense of humor... honestly!" The female voice of Joe's shouted to the sky. Feeling all of the rest of His body, he was now convinced of one big thing. He was now a she.
"So this is the catch, Eh? How am I supposed to redeem myself in the wrong body?!" Joe shouted to the sky as she crumpled herself up in a ball. This was not the kind of rebirth that Joe was looking for. Completely naked and in the dark... and with no money to fall back on, all she could do now was hope for the best and either have a sign come from above or find a way out of this mess. She was certainly hoping for the former as she slid to the side of the dumpster to shelter herself from the impending chill of the night to come.
