There's a Jet Blue plane with stuck nose gear on its way to an emergency landing in LA - 149 people on board, and fuel that must be dumped over the ocean before they can try a foam landing.

I just can't imagine how frightening this must be for all those people. :(

They'll likely be okay. This happens enough pilots train for it. Dumping fuel will reduce chance of explosion from sparks kicked up. They'll foam the run way to cut down on sparks. If pilot keeps his/her cool, it should be okay.

On CNN now...

Putting all gear up is an option...

front gear is down but turned sideways. Apparently they cannot retract it. They are flying around low.

Very scary for those aboard.

MSNBC is showing live coverage of the plane. Are they hoping it will explode into a million pieces so they can show it to the world and boost their ratings?

Sorry, I'm not in the best mood today.

Prayers for those people. :rose:

Turns out the airplane that's in trouble has a television in every seatback and one of the available channels is ... wait for it ... MSNBC. They're now sending messages of reassurance to those passengers on board.

Okay, I admit that I keep flipping back to MSNBC to check on these people. They have just stated that the people on board the flight are watching this telecast of their flight. The reporters are trying to reassure the people that all is being done to help them.

Im just not sure how I feel about this.

The fuel dump is more to reduce weight.

Don't worry. This is the easiest malfunction to handle (edited to add: involving landing gear). THe majority of the weight of landing is taken by the rear wheels, the brakes are on the rears, they'll have a rough landing but seriously this is an every pilot trains for event.

The front landing gear is not even used until a considerable amount of speed is lost in the landing..

I imagine the crew turned that off. I'm sure they're going over the emergency procedures at this point.

I'd hope.

I was on a flight that lost an engine, and they switched off the channel 9 tower to plane communications passengers could listen too, but they didn't think of it until after I'd heard what had happened (30 minutes before the crew told us).

It seems odd to become a spectator at your own mortal peril.

edited to add: I bet they didn't like it when the crew shut them down, though.

The foaming crews and the pilots know the parameters on these things. The chances were good, all in all. Nana anyway!
