In the UK the following are the current ages of consent for different “legal” experiences: -

Drinking = 18
Marriage (and sex) = 16
Riding a Moped * = 16
Driving a car * = 17
Riding a motorbike * = 17
Smoking = 16
Gambling ** = 16
Voting = 18

* This applies to driving on the public highway, off- road and on private land there is no age limit.
**This applies to scratch card gambling Casino gambling is 18

So a 16 year old can ride a moped to a church, while stopping to buy a scratch card with the chance to win £250,000; smoke a cigarette and then get married but cannot drink to celebrate the event.

Can those in other areas please put their A o C's for comparison.

U.S. goes like this...

drinking: 21
marriage: 16 with parental permission, 18 without
sex out of wedlock: 18
moped: 16 (i think)
car: 16 (15 with learner's permit and adult parent or guardian who's had lisence for over a year)
motorcycle: 16
smoking: 16
gambling: 18 (even scratchies)

Actually, the USA is mangled and tangled mix of jurisdictions, all with their own age of consent rules.

For example, where Shila is, it's legal for scratch ticket gambling at eighteen, here in Nevada, it's 21 just to be in the casinos.

In Denver Colorado, circa 1970, My bride of eighteen did not need her parents consent to marry, but at 19, I was two years to young to marry without my guardian's consent.

Age of consent for marriage with parents permission is (or has been in the past) as low as 12 in some places.

Now see in PA the legal age of consensual sex is 16.

And technically due to a little snag in the law you can smoke a cigarette at any age but you cannot purchase them until the age of 18.

i wandered around in the casinos in Vegas with my parents when i was.. maybe 13, but i didn't go anywhere near the tables. I don't kniow about casino gambling, cause i don't have that much money to waste, but my brother and I uased to play penny blackjack when i was about 7. whoever won those pennies kept them, although we were pretty much even again by the time we stopped playing. that's gambling, but it's one of those weird little things, like drinking at home with your parents, i.e. having a sip of champagne of new year's is legal.

the us is really messed up.

BTW, WH, I'm in Illinois.

Now see in PA the legal age of consensual sex is 16.

Actually, in Pennsylvania, 14 and 15 year olds can legally have sex provided that their partner is less than 4 years older than them.

My parents were married at 12 and 13, but it was legal coz they wuz related.

Actually, even that much alcohol is illegal for a minor in all states in the US.

Hmmm.
In Oregon I believe it's.

Hetro sex: 16
Homo sex: 18
Drinking: 21
Voting: 18
Driving (car): 15 1/2
Driving (tractor): 13
Gambling: 21
Porn: 18

At least that's what I remember.

Well...Actually in some states it is not illegal for parents to give their children alcohol. In Ohio a parent can buy a child a drink, even in a restaurant & let them drink it. As long as it is a parent & they bought it.

The odds are pretty good that in most jurisdictions, the parent could be charged with "child endagerment", or "contributing to the delinquency" or something similar if they made a habit of buying drinks for their children. Especially if they allow the child to get drunk in public.

I can't think of anywhere that allowing a child one sip to toast in the new year or similar occasion where there would be a risk of prosecution. (Sacremental Wine has always been exempt from alchohol control legislation for example.)

True...odds are social services would be called. If an officer walks past a house where they are having a cook out and sees a father hand his 10 year old a beer, he cannot arrest or site the parent. He may report it to child welfare and it MAY eventually end up it court under endangering...but it is not illegal in Ohio.
Not trying to be argumentative just statin' the facts.http://smilecwm.tripod.com/fk/hearts.gif

I think Adoratrice is right.
What was the question again?

.. Doesn't matter I guess.
