this is why I love my Thesaurus....

What is the context? I'll see what the big T comes up with.

i have trouble thinking up new ways of saying 'against' wherever it occurs and it occurs a lot.

The spring wind painted bent trees
against the sky, thunder
scrolled the slate.

maybe i should just say 'on the sky'

In that sense the word "upon" works.

Or you could shift a few words to add depth -

"The spring wind painted trees
bent against the sky."

Think about a different word and a different way of saying it completely.

The spring wind painted bent trees
upon the sky, thunder
scrolled the slate.

You do paint upon canvas. ;)

...sometimes i think it would be far easier to use a brush instead of a pencil, and then i switch to charcoal which gives me greater depth in shades, but no colour.

I did the reverse and gave up my charcoal and paints to write - there really is more colour in poetry you just have to get the other guy to see it.

:)

nevermind the other guy, i want to see the poetry for myself in my own technicoloured waffle first... then i'll worry about the other guy. ;)
