Advice Needed

Isn't putting someone on "ignore" pretty much the electronic equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and going, "la la la la la la.... I can't hear you!! la la la la la la....."

Isn't putting someone on "ignore" pretty much the electronic equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and going, "la la la la la la.... I can't hear you!! la la la la la la....."

I have often thought of that myself. I only have one person on iggy, and that is Brinnie, because of the disgusting posts she used to make, or still makes. Oterwise, if I feel strongly enough, I just skip that person's posts.

I figure that even a poo flinging monkey will sometimes make sense.

I never place anyone on ignore. I know who the poopy-heads are and skip them.

To some degree, of course it is.

But when the person has demonstrated time and time again that they never have anything worthwhile to say, if their idiocy is blocked then I don't waste my time reading their tripe.

Win-win.

:D

You know what's funny about my original post here? It had nothing to do with the OP, really, and was a response to some inane post by Carney. Then, I was dismissed by the OP, which is what got my ire up. I thought his question was valid and reasonable though.

*shrugs*

Whatever.

I'm sorry TK, you know I think you and most of the posters on this topic are fantastic people, and I'll probably get reamed by you guys, but I can't stay quiet about this stuff anymore.

First of all if it had been me posting the topic, didn't know who you were and had read your reply, even if it wasn't directed towards me, I'd have been offended. You may have been replying to Carny, but when I read that it just sounded like you were saying the person who posted the topic was an idiot. Now, I know that's not what you meant, but that is how it sounded. Remember, this person does not know any of us. I actually thought his original thoughts were valid (although he could have worded them better), and have run into that problem myself at times.

Second, I'm thoroughly disgusted at the quick degeneration of the original topic into a flamefest. We all know JBJ is pathetic, that's why I have him on ignore. I wouldn't have known what he said at all if you guys hadn't kept quoting the guy. I know what he said was reprehensible and absolutely disgusting, and I'm not defending him at all, but replying to his comments only makes things worse and serves to give him exactly what he wants. He gets off on stirring shit up and causing trouble. He absolutely loves it when you get all riled up whenever he says something offensive. That's why he keeps doing it. So what to do? IGNORE HIM!!! I never have any problems with him or Scouries because I NEVER SEE THEM. I made the mistake of feeding the trolls before, which is when I learned how dumb it was. But whatever, to each their own.

Third, this guy is new to our forum. I commend the people who offered welcomes and advice on how he should conduct himself. Obviously he's going to get defensive if he feels offended or attacked. This is not an isolated incident either. I've seen what incurring the wrath of certain people entails, and it isn't pretty. Sometimes it is well deserved, and I have no problem with that. Other times it isn't. Can we please PLEASE try not to judge people we don't even know so quickly?

And finally, I am SO sick of people getting on people for being young (in this case), or saying they're young because they don't have perfect grammar or do something someone doesn't like. "Oh you didn't use a period, you must be young." Give me a fucking break. I know a lot of 20 somethings, being 26 myself, and I know many who are incredibly intelligent and well spoken. Being young does not make us stupid. On the flip side, I know people in their thirties, forties, and even fifties who are as dumb as a brick. What the fuck does someone's age have anything to do with anything?

Sorry for the rant, but I am sick and tired of all this bullshit. Most of you know that I don't get pissed off easily. I don't like being pissed off. But just so you know, I am PISSED OFF.

Fuck.

Wow. What an, er, educational thread. :)

I thought "Don't feed the trolls" was one of the first things that anybody learned on the net. Maybe we can all post signs above our computers as a reminder:

DON'T FEED THE TROLLS!

This has been a public service announcement. :)

Indeedy. Very well said. :rose:

Fair reader, the fly in the ointment is: Every poster is a troll in the opinion of some other.

Well, my goodness! I've been dressed down, haven't I?

I'm sorry you were offended Trom. Truly, I am, because this had nothing to do with you. Since you are already offended, though, I'm going to go ahead and say what I need to say.

I have to wonder what your motivation was to come along a day and a half later with more drama. You'll notice that I stopped posting on this thread, myself. I felt that more than enough had been said on this particular topic. I guess getting your belated two cents in was important to you. *shrugs* Fine. I'm sure you've gotten some good mileage out of it.

I stand by what I said. Again, sorry you didn't like it. I call it like I see it. Y'all can go ahead and put me on iggy too.

Just one thing Trom, this age versus youth thing.

It's not the youth that bothers us (well it does, but that's jealousy) It's not even an assured, sometimes brazen or cocky manner (we Europeans are used to that from Yanqui of all ages) it's a matter of experience plus our personal intimations of mortality.

"When you get to my age..." is a popular, tremendously popular, saying amongst those of mature years.

It's not being dismissive of youth, it's simply being chary of a mind that can jump to conclusions so much faster without any apparent process in between. [Note use of the word 'apparent'.]

Along with this is the idea of 'wisdom' which, as you've already mentioned, doesn't necessarily come from the ageing process. But physical age isn't always the motivating factor in being 'old'.

TheEarl took some real stick for his youth and defended himself well and articulately, even though he sometimes went off the deep end about the prejudices of age v. youth. These days, The (though posting infrequently) is regarded as an old hand on the AH. I believe that he's younger than you (but I've not actually seen you being flagellated because of your age either) and he has a particular 'wisdom' which is apparent in his posts and relationships on this board.

I've wondered away from my point here. What was it now... ah yes; Experience.

Experience always colours thought. Those of us that are twice your age have twice as much experience of simply being alive, along with a vast range of other everyday things like arthritis, death of family, birth of family, successive governments and so on.

Then you come in here (not you obviously and not Prodigy as far as I'm concerned) but you come in here with your bright fantastic ideas about the state of writing on the site, how you're blocked and can't get your act together, where apostrophes ought to be and The Question and the thing is, we've seen it all before. If you're that gung ho and clever why do you need to ask?

My first thought on reading the original post was 'it's because you're not jaded enough for it to be routine.'

The difference between age and youth, between experience and novel is immediacy. The 'old timers' on here (whatever age they are) are searching for novelty but youthful immortality and zeal don't cut it.

It doesn't excuse anything but it is mitigating.

TROM

Nonsense. Youre like 99% of people on the planet who sniff each others butts and stalk non-conformists. At least be honest that you dont like anyone who rattles your model of how the world is.

GAUCHE

Its been my experience that most people repeat their experiences, and each occasion is novel to them.

Yes, each occasion is novel simply because you're not the same person as you were before because of the previous experience.

But similarity goes a long way to defeating the thrill of novelty.

Well, my goodness! I've been dressed down, haven't I?

Indeed.

I stand by what I said, too.

Trom: when I refer to someone as "young," I'm judging them solely by their posts and not their appearance - I'm not referring to their physical age. I thought that would've been clear, since I obviously have nothing else to go by. There are those, like The Earl who are very clearly wise beyond their years. There are others....well, not so much.

Sorry you got your feathers ruffled, but as TK said, it was over and done with as far as I was concerned until you brought it back up.

I think its a damn shame that people jumping on the hater bandwagon have run off a valuable member of the community - TK's posted that she's gone. I hope it was worth it.

I'm done with this thread.

GAUCHE

Youre SOOOO right.

I pissed on an electric fence when I was 3, and every time I pee on electric fences I remind myself that this time may be different....because I'm a different person.

My intent was not to run anyone off, and I very clearly said that, but I knew people were going to read what they wanted to and ignore the rest. I didn't see this thread until last night, which is why I didn't say anything. However, this sort of thing has become a recurring trend and I'm sick of sitting back and letting it happen. My comments were less to do with this specific thread, but an overall observation of things happening in the AH.

TK, I'm sorry you feel you have to leave. As I said, I think you're a fantastic person. I was not offended by your post because I know you better. I merely wanted to point out that it would sound offensive to someone who didn't know you. Also, only that comment was directed towards you, the rest was directed at everyone in general. I didn't make my comments seeking anything. I spent last night reading through the thread and saw several things that just angered me more and more to the point where it overflowed and I needed to vent about it. First the flamefest involving JBJ, which turned into attacking Prodigy, which then turned into the whole "You must be young" bullshit. Your post was just one of many from several different people. I was not trying to attack you in any way, and I am very sorry you feel that I was.

My motivation was nothing more than venting about the continued mistreatment of people on this forum, and TK I'll say again that I am not accusing you of that and most of those comments were not directed towards you. However it is there, and as much as I dislike it I will not run away. There are too many good people and good friends on here to leave behind. I did not want any kind of "mileage" at all. I don't even know what you meant from that. However, in this case my "two cents" were important for me to speak on. I mean, when do I EVER go out on a limb like this? It was really bothering me, and had been for some time. But I guess I need a selfish motive to do or say something. *shrugs* Whatever.

And Cloudy, I hope you don't think I was trying to run TK off the site. If you truly believe that then you are dead wrong and don't know me AT ALL. I won't even address your "hater bandwagon" comment. If you feel the need to blame TK's departure on me then go right ahead. I tried to make it as clear as possible that I thought she was fantastic, and I'm truly saddened by her departure from the forum. I wasn't "hating" on anyone.

And thank you SSS, Lou and Starr, I appreciate the kind words. Thank you for reading what I had to say with an open mind. :)

And thank you for the comments Gauche. I have to say that the age thing is only one of many things I was irked with, but it was something that had been bothering me a lot. I pride myself on being young both physically and mentally. I don't like seeing people throw the term "young" around. You gave me a lot to think about and I thank you for that. :)

Trom's right. He was treated shabbily.

Put yourself in the place of someone who doesn't know nothing from nothing and read through the thread again and you'll see WP get slapped around rather rudely.

Heaven forbid someone say what they actually think around here. That would be wrong!

Thats what we do best here: Slap people silly when they have a contrary opinion. My guess is we're too fucking insecure to deal with difference.

I put much of the blame for this on the trolls.

The trolls we've accumulated are very sneaky. They offer nothing but chaos and some have even stated their purpose is to bring down the AH.

They create confusion, distrust and anger, and make it damn near impossible for a brand new Lit member to understand the normal board dynamics.

We must not stoop to their level. (I know, I'm guilty, too. But I'm going to try harder.)

You know what we should do? Report post #11. The message beneath the reporting of a post box says that a post can be reported for being "problematic (rude, harassment or fighting)". I think that one was an all-in-one.
