Halex traveled with Druuna, anointing himself as her guardian against the perils of the desolate, barren land they were crossing. The sun was full and hot, with nary a cloud in the sky, parching not only the land, but their lips also. The earthen path upon which they followed was cracked and brittle beneath their feet. They had moved with determination and speed, Halex spending most of the time, trailing Druuna, mindlessly admiring the wonderful view of her curves, and reminiscing about their tempestuous encounter over and over again.
Not many words were spoken during the walk, Druuna's determination, evidenced by her purposeful stride. Halex's eyes, occasionally scanned the horizon, looking for any signs of life, whether human, or not. He had spotted a black dot, looming in the distance, and prepared himself for a possible battle. The pair, soon found themselves conversing with a shrouded woman, whose whispered voice matched the dry, cracked surroundings. Halex wondered how the shrouded woman could survive, alone, and in the intense heat, yet did not question her. Druuna had drawn from her the location of a small oasis, lingering just over the visible horizon, slightly to the northwest. They parted ways, the woman remaining silent about the condition of District 5.
Halex's trepidation began to increase after crossing paths with the mysterious woman, unsure of where they'd be heading if the tales of District 5 were true.
Thankfully, the woman's direction was impeccable, Halex finding himself and Druuna at a shallow well, from which Druuna was eagerly drinking. When she had offered him his share, her proffered hand outstretched to him, Halex was rewarded with the sight of a bare breast, its succulent nipple poking out from its base. His mouth watered at the recollection of how the taut rubbery flesh felt inside his mouth earlier that morning. His eyes lingered longer than he had intended, Druuna's voice disrupting his vivid recall of her naked flesh.
Blinking away the image in his mind, Halex drank from the rusty bucket, re-energizing his body for the remainder of the trip that lay ahead.
He heard Druuna's determination to find what it was she journeyed for, despite Halex's claim. Again, he teetered on whether he wished, she was right, or he was right.
The afternoon sun was worse than the morning. Beads of sweat began decorating their flesh, salty droplets falling into his eyes, burning and blurring his vision. The cloaks hung heavily on their bodies.
Halex was shocked when Druuna abruptly shed her cloak, flinging it over her shoulder, walking utterly topless under the baking sun. Trailing behind, Halex could not enjoy the view an occasional vulture overhead was treated with. Besides, he felt somewhat guilty for shredding her top during their heated encounter, leaving her with nothing to wear, other than the cloak.
Druuna didn't seem to give the matter any second thought, parading proudly, shoulders back, head held high in search of District 5. The more Halex thought about it, it seemed okay for Druuna to enjoy the sun and the caramel color it painted her skin with. There was nothing within view on the horizon, and if perchance, someone, or something was spotted, she'd have plenty of time to cover herself back up!
Sure enough, as the sun began to settle, in the distance, they both spotted the upright structures of what once was a bustling little city. Each step brought them closer to the buildings which seemed to grow out of the ground, getting taller, most of whose tops were sheared off, leaving crumpling, decayed statues behind.
Druuna donned her cloak once again, turning her head back over her shoulder and let out a harrumph, as if to say, "I told you so."
Her stride quickened, and Halex hastened to keep up, doing his best to survey the surroundings as they approached an all too familiar myriad of barbed wire, fencing off the city limits from the barren land that surrounded it. A large post hung near the fence, a tin metal sign, designating the area as District 5, hung limp from one rusted nail, securing it to the post. A good strong wind would soon rip the sign from its post.
There was no sign of life within the fenced off area, but that didn't stop Druuna, from searching for an entrance. It was Halex that found a small enough opening, that if one pulled carefully, the other could slip through. He held it open for Druuna, not really having the time to thoroughly enjoy the view of her ass as she made her way inside. Druuna returned the favor, holding the barbed wire so that Halex could join her on the other side.
Now inside the compound, the two moved as one, their haste now slowed by the careful inspection of every corner, and darkened alleyway. There were no fires, no burnt barrels where survivors gathered, as was the norm at District 4. A few doorless shacks made of scrap tins, were passed along the way towards the center of the town, where several brick structures remained somewhat in tact.
There was an eerie silence to the city, that Halex was uncomfortable with. His hand on the hilt of his blade, he was prepared for a battle. The feel of eyes on him, unnerved him, yet, there was no one in sight, only the presumed souls of those who had passed.
Halex remained silent, following Druuna, allowing her to come to her own conclusion that he was right! There was no one left! One by one, she moved from shack to shack, building to building, searching for anything ... anyone!
Coming up empty handed, time and time again, Halex lowered his guard. So when Druuna entered through an actual door, Halex thought nothing of it, following closely on her heels, as if to say, "I told you so..."
The simultaneous clicks thundered through the silence of the city, echoing in the concrete structure they were within. Halex and Druuna suddenly found themselves the target of three large shotguns, aimed directly at their heads. They were surrounded, the ends of the barrels only inches from them. Halex's eyes could see three dirty looking men staring back at him. Then there was an audible "THUD!" Halex felt a pounding in the back of his head, and within seconds, he slipped into blackness as he slumped to the floor in a crumpled heap!
