Addicted to Comments

I have three LW stories out, with one more on the way. Together, they’ve received about 60 comments, but only a handful have been positive. Still, like you, I really enjoy reading them, and they make me smile every time. My favorite one is this:

If they knew how much I enjoy their negative comments, they probably wouldn't send them anymore 😉

Here's my favorite:

What did I think of this story is the question in the Comments box.

My answer: not much.

Not sure if I'm the only one, but I live for comments, even the bad ones (especially the bad ones) on my stories. I have a song with a 2.86 Rating and 57 Comments, and another currently with a 4.6 Rating and 1 Comment, and I gotta say I get more from the 2.86 Rated story. I get no real satisfaction from a high Rating, but a comment that says how I'm a bad writer and that someone absolutely hates my characters .. I absolutely love the Comments like that .. that comment tells me someone read the whole story and cared enough about the character to hate them. A 5 star rating and no comment tells me nothing in comparison.

Just curious if I'm the only one.

I hate you for getting 57 comments on a 2.86 rated story(song). You should rename it: Heinz's 57 Varieties Song. JK, actually, that's an amazing accommplishment judging by my stories dating back over 20 years. Two or three of my lowest rated stories also have more comments than my highest rated ones, which never made sense to me. I can honestly say that comments I've left for writers have all been on stories that I rated highly.

On the subject of comments, has anyone in recent weeks had comments vanish from their stories, even some that had been up for years and posted under site members' names?

One user had commented on a number of my stories, but all inexplicably vanished one day, even some from back in 2018 and 2019. A positive comment from about 3 years ago vanished from another, and to my disappointment one comment about my story 'Kyle's Revenge' which said that it should have a warning that you can lose IQ points reading it also disappeared, which was a shame as the comment was really funny.

None of the comments breached the site rules - for example site administrators obviously removed other comments from stories in the past where I was told that they hoped I would get cancer and die, to go and commit suicide and another that I needed to have my head smashed in with a hammer - yet were gone without explanation. It's very strange.

Every time I see a notification that I have a new comment, my heart fills with dread and I close my eyes before I click on it

Absolutely love comments and feedback, they're a drug. Positive, critical, thats all good. Even the negative ones can be good if you tell me what you didn't like and why. It's all actual proof that someone read the whole story and cared enough to write a comment. That's awesome.

Readers can now delete their own comments. At any time. I've had some disappear when a reader deleted their account or for other unknown reasons.

And when you've replied to such a comment, it makes you look like an idiot :)

Comments are definitely great.

Rating? sure, thanks. Favorites? much appreciated.

But someone actually taking the time to tell me how they feel about my work is the best.

The account holder probably asked for their account to be deleted. I believe that strips their comments from the database.

I think the site runs a hate word finder algorithm on occasion, which would explain such removals.

Amidst the deafening silence of my first published chapter, I received 3 or 4 exceptionally short, "attaboys" and one much longer critique of my overly descriptive style. The post actually reads like a well-intentioned breakdown regarding the chapter and it must have taken a few minutes to write. I assume the writer rewarded my effort with a four or three star rating. The writer completely misses the point that the descriptiveness is there for a reason and the right readers will read those words and visualize the events while getting just a tiny bit harder or a tiny bit wetter.

In any case, that longer review, which can easily be placed in the negative pile, is my favorite review because effort recognizes effort and I appreciate the time it took to write an honest review. It means more than the two and three-word encouraging reviews and more than the thousands (15k) who read and wandered off and the 60 starry mouseclicks it has received in one month.
