Ad Hominem Attacks, or "You're a Dick!"

I've been doing some reading here and, well, there's a lot of bullshit flying around.

I bet you've seen it.

Guess what's caused it?

Yep...the ol' "Ad Hominem" attack: when someone attacks the person making an argument instead of the argument itself. It's a pretty chickenshit way of discussing an issue because it closes down debate and clouds the real issue in a storm of name-calling and insults. You can't get to the heart of a debate once the name calling starts. When that happens, it's over. Shut off the lights. Close the door. Kill the thread, 'cause it's dead, Jim.

Unfortunately, it's what happens here a lot. The recent "fat chicks and bitches" thread and the subsequent threads which spun off from it are recent examples. Luckily, many of the main people involved haven't responded in kind, else things would be a lot worse.

So, here's the deal. When someone makes a comment, regardless of how you take it, check yourself for a second before you type the response. Are you about to attack the person who made the comment? Better think twice. Did the person attack you directly? Did he or she call you by name? No? Then ease off. Maybe the person just made a disparaging remark about a group of people of which you may be a member. If that's the case, then he wasn't insulting you directly. There's probably a good chance that the poster had no idea at all what groups you belong to. More than likely the poster is doing one of two things: venting about the behavior of a group of people who have done him wrong most recently or whose behavior has confused or angered him, or he's trying to get a cheap rise out of you. In either case, the only good response is a reasonable and calm one. Period. If he then turns on you directly and calls you bad names, then fire away. You have weapons free. :)

In short, lighten the hell up. It ain't personal unless your name's attached to it.

OK.

Got it.

But I think there are way too many on here who just enjoy pushing the buttons of the people of this board.

Its like saying ignore the bully and he will stop. No he wont. you have to stand up-get personal-and take care of the problem.

But this is only my opinion.

Well, no. You didn't get my point.

What I am saying is not "Ignore the bully". We're not talking about a bully here. We're not even talking about button-pushing.

What I'm saying is if you're not being attacked, don't react as if you're being attacked.

Here...let me sum up the basic arguments of those threads.

Poster: "Why is it that fat women get slack and short men don't? why do some stereotypes elicit sympathy and others don't?"

Overwhelming Majority: "You said I was fat! Fuck you, prick!"

See the problem here? I left out the obscuring language which, even to me, seemed excessive and obscured that point, but I'd chalk that up to wanting the thread to get some attention, rather than to being a prick.

Yeppers, that works in theory, Jazzy.

In reality, however, the dweebs on this board share one lowly brain cell between them, and it gets rotated on a daily basis. So, on any given day in Lit land, there's a lot of dweebs not having a turn of said cell. Hence, a lot of idotic comments.

That's my theory, anyway :)

Are you sure? A WHOLE brain cell? Surely not.

I'm back and I gotta agree with you JazzManJim.

Good thread

Right On, Jazz...

It's also interesting that some of the "attackers" will totally ignore logically put, calming statements like yours above... Flame they will, but answer to a pointed question, they won't...

Foxie is 100% ON! They're dweebs. full stop. :D

I would have thought that "fat & tall" would have died a much-deserved death by now - but it persists...

The "button-pushers", i suspect are the worst offenders in this crew of dweebs - and the least likely to respond to sane critiques like yours...

That being said, you may have noticed that sometimes i like to bait the dweebs a bit ... It's S-O-O-O much fun, even when it makes me one of them, too.

Women always clean up in the end, Jazzy :)

And if you do a good job about it, you should always know how much you're appreciated for it. :)
