Britlad here. Yesterday, I read this:

https://www.commondreams.org/news/2...te-social-security-and-medicare?cd-origin=rss

https://www.reddit.com/r/LeopardsAt...baby_boomers_being_some_of_his_highest_voter/

So, if I understand this news piece correctly, Trump declared that he would terminate social security and Medicare if reelected. As far as I know, the vast majority of Trump's elector are boomers, the kind of people that tend to suffer from chronic health issues.

So, American voters are going to vote en masse for a politician that told them squarely in their face that he would leave them penniless and homeless if they ever dare to get diabetes or heart problems (as almost everyone over 40 does).

Am I getting it right?

As uaual when the normal gang of ingrates, liars and hypocrites make some grand announcement that implies BAD Trump

Before stroking out listen to what Trump said and didn't say and then listen to the calm rationalization of the situation.

And don't worry.

You WILL be paying more taxes at some point no matter what happens.:D

Yes...that is what he said on TV. But he doesn't have the authority. It will be like getting rid of Obamacare...never happen.

He only has the authority of Executive Actions, which Republicans complained about when Obama used them. But now...they support them...surprise surprise. Of the 4 he just signed concerning Covid relief, 3 will immediately head to the Courts as over-reach, because he doesn't have the right to tell States how they must use money. As it stands, people think the payroll tax reduction is good...except...it is due at the end of year, because only Congress has that right. Same with student loans.

Maybe.
Congress will get off their asses and Actually DO something when it's needed, even if is only to make Trump look bad.

Trump isn't as dumb and as naive as he acts.

So.

All that stuff OBAMA did by executive Order was wrong?

As Trump said it isn't the proper way to do things and is is only temporary legally, but it is a start.

There is literally nothing they won't torture into some beneficial narrative. Delaying the collection of the tax is as far as he can go, and as far as he went. Now congress can make employers and essential worker pay that up later by doing nothing or offer a tax break retroactively as they see fit and take the credit or blame as they do so.

The alternative to a tax holiday is to collect as per usual from one of the taxpayers pockets while simultaneously cutting him a stimulus check, paid for out of the taxes he pays, which go, not into a Social Security lockbox, but are simply revenue into the General Fund.

What I like about this idea is in theory and employer could give each employee a 15% bigger paycheck. If employees ever get a look at their actual.check without the Ponzi Scheme deducted, they might understand why provitization of -their- retirement money by -them- is better for -them-

Can you imagine how wealthy retirees would be if that had been done in Reagan's time? 15% of every check just into index funds? Instead of giving it to Uncle Ponzi to "keep it safe" for them?

So indirectly it could lead to change.

Trump signed four documents, but only one was an Executive Order. The other three were memoranda.

The Executive Order on housing doesn’t ban evictions. It states that the heads of HHS and CDC can determine whether a ban on evictions is necessary.

PR stunts. It’s all he’s got. Like most of his Presidency.

Nothing like that DACA stunt. Obama even openly admitted he did not have the authority to do what he then did, and it is still paying PR dividends.

We've reached the de rigeur "Trunp wants to push granny off the cliff," scare the seniors into voting Democrat, portion of the campaign.

No, we haven't. It's like when you clowns claimed Obama was bringing death panels to the elderly. And type in English, FFS.

The thing that most people leave out of the Soc Sec discussion is that a portion of the funds collected include coverage for disability.

Thanks for the answers. As a non-American, there were lots of nuances that I could not grasp.

Trump is a goddamn foolish cult leader and his followers are weak-minded clowns who hate America.

There ya go.

Eliminating or scaling back social programs has been the holy grail of the Republican Party for quite a while.

The same people that support golden parachutes for corporate criminals don't want the common person to have an umbrella when life rains on them.

It isn't hard to figure out.

For millions of common people to have any quality of life in difficult times, the wealthy would have to lower the quality of their lives. They are trying to do everything in their power to make sure that doesn't happen. Trump is a classic example of a wealthy person fucking over everyone else, just so he can literally sit(shit) on a golden throne(toilet).

Payroll taxes fund social security, and interrupting contributions to the program is a "test balloon" to see how much of an uproar it causes among the masses. If people just nod their heads and accept this thinly veiled attack on social security, it will give Trump and the GOP free license to make bolder moves against other government programs. If the electoral college re-elects Trump and the GOP holds the senate, expect to see more brinksmanship over cutting social programs and taxing the rich.

By "Congress" you must mean the Republican Senate. The House has done a lot. They've passed their second coronavirus bill. The hold up is in the Senate right now.

Some people are saying the Rs want Trump to go down and so are fuckign him over on this by doing squat.

Either way, it's Rs who are not doing anything.

I've rather thought that Trump wanted the congressional talks to collapse so that he could pretend he's saving the day himself by putting out an executive order that will look like something to his supporters even though it's actually nothing other than preparation for more screwing of everyone, including his dopey supporters, later.

Politics is like throwing a knife into a crowded blacked out basement full of half enemies.

Several Somebodies is going to get knifed and large amounts of bull shit is on the menu!

More than 80 percent of white evangelical Christians voted for Donald Trump in 2016, and polls show a similar level of support in November. For many observers, the relationship seems mystifying: a religion that prizes the Bible and sexual morality embracing a twice-divorced president who rarely goes to church and built a career off gambling.

To understand the dynamic, Elizabeth Dias, who covers religion for The Times, traveled to Sioux Center, Iowa, one of the most conservative Christian communities in the nation.

“I think Trump is going to restore our freedoms, where we spent eight years, if not more, with our freedoms slowly being taken away under the guise of giving freedoms to all,” one supporter said. “Caucasian-Americans are becoming a minority. Rapidly.”

But the line that gained notoriety — the promise that he “could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody” and “wouldn’t lose any voters” — overshadowed another message that morning.

“I will tell you, Christianity is under tremendous siege, whether we want to talk about it or we don’t want to talk about it,” Mr. Trump said.

Christians make up the overwhelming majority of the country, he said. And then he slowed slightly to stress each next word: “And yet we don’t exert the power that we should have.”

If he were elected president, he promised, that would change. He raised a finger.

“Christianity will have power,” he said. “If I’m there, you’re going to have plenty of power, you don’t need anybody else. You’re going to have somebody representing you very, very well. Remember that.”

Nine days later, the Iowa caucuses kicked off the most polarizing road to the White House in memory. Mr. Trump largely lost the evangelicals of Sioux County that day: Only 11 percent of Republicans caucused for him. But when November came, they stood by him en masse: 81 percent of the county voted for him. And so did 81 percent of white evangelical voters nationwide.
because he's the bully on their side, who promised to return the church-going, white family with children as 'the norm' in their minds
