About that Muslim Brotherhood...

This is true, but I'm of the opinion that countries with "official" or "state" religions tend to be closer to theocracies than democracies.

In Europe there are no theocracies save Vatican City, but many countries have an official church.

Brotherhood leaders to go on trial in Egypt

By Alistair Lyon

CAIRO (Reuters) - Three leaders of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood go on trial in Cairo on Sunday on charges of inciting lethal violence during unrest that preceded the army's overthrow of President Mohamed Mursi.

Mohamed Badie, the Islamist movement's "General Guide", and his two deputies, Khairat al-Shater and Rashad Bayoumy, will not attend the High Court session, the state news agency MENA said.

The trial signals the determination of Egypt's new army-backed rulers to crush an organization they have portrayed as a violent, terrorist group bent on undermining the state.

The Brotherhood, which won five successive votes after the fall of former President Hosni Mubarak in 2011, says it is a peaceful movement unjustly targeted by the generals who ousted Mursi, Egypt's first freely elected leader, on July 3.

The military contends it was responding to the people's will, citing vast demonstrations at the time against the rule of a man criticized for accumulating excessive power, pushing a partisan Islamist agenda and mismanaging the economy.

Mursi has been in detention in an undisclosed location since army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi deposed him.

Charges against Badie and his aides include incitement to violence and relate to an anti-Brotherhood protest outside the group's Cairo headquarters on July 30 in which nine people were killed and 91 wounded. The 70-year-old Brotherhood leader was detained last week. Shater and Bayoumy were picked up earlier.

The trial opens only three days after Mubarak, who was arrested in April, 2011, left prison following a court order to release him. He faces a retrial on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the revolt against him, but judges have ruled there are no legal grounds to keep him behind bars.

...I'm predicting, with the above cooperation, that there will be a thorough cleansing of the Bro's terrorist arm - Hamas - from the Gaza Strip.

One must remember the thorough cleansing Syria effected on their branch of the Bros in the city of Hama itself...

...it would definitely be enjoyable to read of the Egyptian and Israeli defense forces allying together to exterminate all jihadis in their part of the world.

Ties between Israel and Egypt only getting stronger, despite regional tension
The two nations enjoy not only tactical cooperation, but a convergence of strategic interests as well.

One of the outcomes of the military coup in Egypt is the stronger bond between Cairo and Jerusalem. Although the two nations want to keep their warmer relationship under wraps, it is hard to ignore the fact that they enjoy not only tactical cooperation the ground, but also a convergence of strategic interests. Considering the dramatic...

With Jordan's and Egypt's security interests continuing to sync with Israel's, and with the extermination of the Bro's Hamas out of Gaza, and the at-hand confrontation with Syria and the big blow the Islamic Republic of Iran and its Hezbollah jihadis are going to experience because of it...

Most excellent news out of Egypt this yuletide:

Egypt names Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's military-backed interim government has declared the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group, a dramatic escalation that gives authorities more power in cracking down on them.

Hossam Eissa, the Minister of Higher Education, read out the Cabinet statement after long meeting on Wednesday. Eissa said: "The Cabinet has declared the Muslim Brotherhood group and its organization as a terrorist organization."

Eissa added that the implications of the declaration punish those who belong to the group, financing it and those promoting the group's activities.

In the 60 and 70s there was a saying the Arabs will fight to the last Egyptian. depiste the cold peace most realistic Egyptians know there is no benefit going to war for islamic terrorist like those ruling the Palestinians.

Sadat understood something I really wish the Saudis and other Gulf states would that fighting Israel brings them no benefit.

Egypt Escalates Crackdown On Muslim Brotherhood, Warns Members Holding Leadership Position Grounds For Execution…

The Muslim Brotherhood went from the peak of power in the Arab world in July to being ground into extinction less than six months later.

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s security authorities launched a sweep of arrests of Muslim Brotherhood members on Thursday and warned that holding a leadership post in the group could now be grounds for the death penalty after it was officially declared a terrorist organization, stepping up the government’s confrontation with its top political nemesis.

The announcement came as a bomb exploded in a busy intersection in Cairo Thursday morning, hitting a bus and wounding five people. Though small, the blast raised fears that a campaign of violence by Islamic militants that for months has targeted police and the military could turn to civilians in retaliation for the stepped up crackdown.

The terrorist labeling of the Brotherhood — an unprecedented step even during past decades when the group was banned — takes to a new level the government’s moves to crush the group, which rode on elections to dominate Egypt’s politics the past three years until the military removed Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in July after massive protests against him.

The Brotherhood vowed to “qualitatively” escalate its protests against the new military-backed interim government, whose authority it rejects. The group has struggled to bring numbers into the streets in past months under a crackdown that has already killed hundreds of its members and put thousands more in prison, including Morsi and other top leaders — and there was little sign of any protests on Thursday.

The moves — all playing out before the backdrop of increasing violence by al-Qaida-inspired militants —raise the potential for greater turmoil as the country nears a key Jan. 14-15 referendum on a revised constitution, a milestone in the post-Morsi political transition. The government is pushing for overwhelming passage of the new document, while the Brotherhood vows to stop it with protests.

Ahmed Imam, spokesman for the Strong Egypt Party founded by ex-Brotherhood member Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, warned that the terrorism label “leaves the Muslim Brotherhood and its supporters only one choice, which is violence.”
