Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is calling on “licensed professionals” and “members of the general public” to report the parents of transgender minors to state authorities if it appears the minors are receiving gender-affirming medical care.

The directive was part of a letter Abbott, a Republican, sent Tuesday to the Department of Family and Protective Services, calling on it to “conduct a prompt and thorough investigation” of any reported instances of minors undergoing “elective procedures for gender transitioning.”

“No court here in Texas or anywhere in the country has ever found that gender-affirming care can be considered child abuse,” said the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas in a statement “The opinion released by Paxton cites highly partisan, outdated, and inaccurate information that ignores the consensus of every major medical association and the evidence-based and peer-reviewed standards of care.”

Major US medical organizations, such as the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association, all say that gender-affirming care is medically necessary for transgender young people.

most trans kids understand their own gender from an early age. They still have to jump through a lengthy process of convoluted hoops in order to be classified as not mentally disturbed involving prolonged psych evaluations (and, in the UK, name-changes and 'showing' they live as their professed gender); once they are accepted, there's extended periods of time where hormonal treatments etc... are used to prepare the person, well before any surgery can take place.
