A woman wanted to pay me for my honesty.

I found $100 while off duty at my place of employment, and turned it in to the night manager. I know what it's like to lose a large amount of cash. The woman came in today and wanted to pay me $5 for my honesty and kindness, which I refused (I don't know who gave her my name). I found this rather sad. Why should society pay people for the things they should do morally, anyway?

It is sad, but how many people would have done the morally correct thing, and how many just say they would. It is nice to be offered a reward for a good deed, but I always turn it down too.

It was her way of saying thank you. As she is probably well aware of how rare honesty in the world can sometimes be. Maybe it was the only way she could say thank you to a total stranger. It's just some peoples nature to give as a way of saying thank you.
I had the same thing happen to me once, and I also refused to accept the money as a reward for being honest. That man actually had a look of hurt expression on his face.

She was probably just incredibly grateful. It is sad but true that most people would have kept the money.

I once lost my wallet on the train on my way to London. I don't know who found my wallet, but if I had known I would have probably offered them something too. I just knew that it would be gone forever, and even though it had money, and all my important papers in it (military ID, credit cards etc.) the thing I was most grateful to get back were the personal photos. It was such a relief to find out that someone had turned it in to lost and found that it nearly brought me to tears.

I don't carry pictures that I can't replace with me anymore after that.

I've seen that expression, so now whenever that happens I take the money and drop it in the next donation box I see.

Unfortunately with all the dishonest people in the world some feel that honesty should be rewarded. I think this is sad though that the world has actually come to this.

Though I wouldn't think twice about returning money I found, I think it's only polite to offer a small reward. I'd be offended if the person didn't.

I've had similar situations as this happen to me over the years - and what I've done since about age 15 is politely refuse the reward...tell them that their thanks are enough...and ask that they do something nice for someone else.

It usually gives them a smile......

Well holy, Nigel. Make me look like a selfish bitch why don't you.
:)

when i was 9 years old my mother and father went to my uncle's wedding in los angeles and had a cousin on my dad's side take care of us. my dad gave me and my brother $15 each as "be good or i'll kill you" money for the 5 days they would be gone. this was a big deal as my parents NEVER EVER gave us kids cash.

on the bus home from school the day they left, i somehow dropped my bright orange plastic wallet which contained only my bus pass, my library card, the little cardboard slip where you write the "this wallet belongs to" information, and my $15.

i didn't realize i'd lost the wallet until i'd gotten off and walked about 2 blocks. i immediately started to cry, and continued to cry as i made my way home. a mexican lady stopped me and asked why i was crying, and i tearfully explained. she took pity on me and gave me $20 (a new bus pass for a student only costed $8 back then) so i could get back on my feet.

a few weeks later a man left a message on our answering machine saying he had found my wallet and wanted to return it. the money was still there.

i never found the lady to pay her back, though i did want to. now, whenever i find a wallet or money i do whatever i can to return it. i owe karma big time.

Well...I didn't mention that, while I would refuse a monetary reward......I wouldn't say no to a blowjob from a lovely lady...... So...what does that make ME look like??

Five bucks? Is that all...I would've held out for twenty, at least. Cheap broad.

:D

I don't consider myself in a situation to decline a reward, but I don't expect one. I'll return money if there is some way to ID it, such as if it's in a wallet, or there is a substantial amount there. A loose five or ten I would keep though.

I think rewards are overrated. It's like giving a child candy because he did a good deed. In the end, you're only contributing to a trip to the dentist. ;)
