A Witches Brew ~ OOC

Basic story of early American settlers on the new frontier (circa 1770's).

Small community of Leicester, approx 100 to 150 people.

The Woods family have been in Leicester for over 10 years. Mr. and Mrs. Woods are well respected. Mrs. Woods is known as the local healer, her daughter following in her footsteps. There are no known doctors in the area.

Plots can include magic and spells, forbidden love, a witch hunt. Open to sugestions.

My Character:
~ Eva Woods
~ 19 years old; long dark hair, green eyes
~ Has lived in Leicester since age of 6, learning to become a practitioner (healer).
~ Has fallen in love with the store keepers son.

Characters needed: Townspeople with various jobs (including a store keeper and son), outside travellers, Mr and Mrs. Woods, plus sibblings if desired.

This is an open thread to anyone who wants to join, but please only serious people who want to make this story work!

Garret Strongfeld.
the town blacksmith.
He has most of the tools of the trade. Anything from a sturdy sword to a horse bit. If he doesn't have it in stock, he can make it. We are getting onto the 19th century, so the only real gun available is the flint lock (horrible thing that takes about two minutes to reload).
He has a small amount of livestock, and lives to himself at the corner of town, being mostly to himself. Still single, and getting up in the years, around 35 or so.
Curly brown hair, and a burly sort of man.

Being a humble Brit, my knowledge of this context is limited, so if I get anything glaringly wrong historically, I’ll correct it.

Widowed – Husband died of influenza, just 9 months ago.

Profession:
Seamstress – takes in work to earn an extra income.

Background

At present living alone in her “marital home”.
Regarded with some suspicion and unease, as she is such a young widow and childless.
Her husband was much older than she and their relationship was always gossiped about.
She has lived in the town since shortly after her marriage 5 years ago and as such is an outsider and only a “recent” addition to the community.

Marthe is of French origin, but has anglicised her name to Martha, which is much more acceptable.
As Martha Williams, she can become more invisible within this close nit community.

When her husband was alive, the couple kept to themselves and spoke very little of their meeting and marriage in France.
Both rejected the more puritan views they found themselves surrounded by, but kept their own more Deist ideas to themselves.
Now she is alone, Martha is much more vulnerable to the prejudices that surround her and yearns for the more open and enlightened outlook of European society.
If only she could find some way to return to her roots.
She knows that she will have to make decisions about her future soon.

Hair: Long and red, considered to be a curse by her parents
Eyes: Bright green, often overly alert
Status:Single, rebellious, with overprotective parents

Brought up as a Puritan by severe English parents, she is the scapegoat of a very well known family. She does not work at all, and her father is considered to be one of the leaders of the town.

Often punished, her mind leads her to flights of fancy, such as changing her name to Solange and getting caught reading novels instead of the Bible, falling asleep in church and waering coloured clothing.

Has a schoolgirl crush on the blacksmith, but has many marriage prospects.

Rumors would fly about her being a witch or somethign similar because of her red hair and alarmingly green eyes.

Peddler and Mysticist

Smart, wise, and rather handsome, this young man (23 years old) travels about with a single wagon, a single horse, a dog, and a cat. He always writes in his journal (he has a least fifteen used ones), and is fairly well tolerated by the Native American cultures in the area, even in this age of oppression and fear.

Of Irish ancestry, though has no accent. Family is small and distant. Owns a vault where he stores the money he doesn't use (doesn't care much for material possessions, but likes to keep what he earns in order to keep score). He studied to be a priest or a scholar, but became neither, though respects both a great deal. Generally quiet about his beliefs... or rather, he doesn't have many strong beliefs, so he gets along with people well.

Of course, not many trust a Peddler. But he's fairly-well known, and he gets by...

I have fallen in love with this story!!!! I can not wait to see how far and where it will go.


Leah Woods:

Age: 18 , Eva's little sister.

Her healing is of animals, not people, as her mother and sister. Her constant companion - Arthur, a hybred wolf.

She and Eva are very close.

Leah loves nature, and mother earth. She is very much in touch with her body and the feelings that surround a young woman. Although she is still a virgin, she does not wish to remain that way.

Leah loves animals and people. She is interested in how people feel about different things. What lessons in life have brought them to their current circumstances. Everything is a wonder to her, and she wants to learn everything she can from this life.

I would appreciate any ideas for making Leah a bit more human. As in not being a know it all. For some reason this is just how she comes out.

In my mind she is loving and caring. I do not know where that goes when I put her to type.

Maybe it is hard getting to know how I want to say things when interacting with other characters.

I have a couple ideas, dreamwvr. I just hope I don't sound arrogant or anything...

The best way to humanize a character is to have a meaningful conversation with another character, one-on-one. Something that expresses your character's emotions. So the other character should be someone Leah has an emotional tie to, whether it be love, anger, friendship, etc.

If you want more emotional writing, I suggest writing down Leah's feelings. Put more detail into her thoughts, rather than her actions.

Oh, and PM other members of the thread if you need ideas of what to say. It can help smooth out the conversation.

Thanks Paen. Yes, this should be a really good role play. As I see is, Earth and Tantric are off on their own, doing what comes naturally, I'd imagine.
Dreamwvr is on her way to the Smithie's house, probably to make a new friend (paen... hint, hint, wink, wink, nudge, nudge).
And Maiden and I are waiting for you to see if you like your water or not.
If you want us to go on, that's all right with me. We could just say you went back to rest, or even jumped out the window... lol. I'm not sure, I trust you enough to know you'll make it good though.
