A weighty issue

I like to look at what fat people buy at the grocery store. I see sodas, ding dongs, twinkies, marshmallows, ice cream, chicken nuggets, pork chops, slim Jims, Jelly filled donuts, fudge, bacon, Captain Crunch, butterfingers, fatback, pizza, hot dogs, and mac and cheese. And this is pretty much the rule not the exception.

The real reason the army develops unmanned drones and robots for fights...

$77 million are paid monthly to approximately 137,000 persons who met obesity requirements for disability. Eat it until you meet it.

I like the grilled chicken salad at McDs. I'd like a large shake too but that's 1160 calories.

It seems like a lot of people get to the point of no return. Met this guy I knew in high school a month ago. He is running his dad's business so he never left town. He's so fat he looked like a cartoon. I don't think I could get my arms all the way around his ass. Not that I would want to. Fat belly too.

Weight can be a struggle for me too but I have a tipping point where I will start to lose. I don't know what it is that makes someone pack on an additional 100 or 200 pounds. If you try to lose weight you start seeing yourself as you are. It's depressing to lose 20 pounds and still feel fat. At some point you just stop weighing at all.

He could be eating away his gay feelings. He was kind of a sissy. Now he is married to a woman.

I don't recall any posts here that I'd call "fat bashing" so I wonder if you could point to a few? What, exactly, does fat-bashing look like to you?
I'd say humor at the expense of someone's weight. Or stating very annoyingly and loudly that all fat people are fat because they choose to be.

The latter two seemed more flippant than offensive and even the first two weren't particularly offensive. You think maybe you're taking this a little too seriously?

Possibly. I don't think I'm any more upset than others would be in different circumstances. How would it be taken if these things below were said? These are in no way my personal opinions. I'm just asking for comparison.

Fags are sinners. They aren't born that way. They choose to be homosexual, and are damaging the morality of everyone.

A large portion of black people are too lazy to work, and it's a drain on our society.

She probably referring to me. When I pointed out all the high caloric fat loaded carb baskets full of shit I see in huge peoples' carts I see all the time. I'm talking 4 or 5 hundred pound people who have to eat that much to maintain their weight.

I don't bash anyone who is trying to lose weight. In fact, I've started several weight loss threads over the years.

And I can understand why you feel irritated, being one of the overweight people whose problem is apparently more than "nom nom nom cant stop eating so good", but like I think I said the majority of overweight people's only problem is that they can't stop eating. They're the ones people making fat jokes talk about, so...yeah.

See, the way you said it there comes off a lot nicer. The way you kept posting was coming off in a manner that you find yourself superior because you're thin. It also really looks like you think most people are fat because of laziness or over eating. It's just not true.

Not to mention I read the thread AA linked and you were a total asshole in it too.

*nods* It is why I'm upset. I also don't think it's ok to make fat jokes about people who do over eat. I have no idea why they over eat. I saw a woman once on a show that was at one point a very beautiful thin woman. She was raped, and afterwards put on 200 pounds in an attempt to make herself unattractive so it would never happen again.

I'm not thin. I've lost 18 pounds this year and still far from thin. I don't think I'd ever be thin unless Obama puts me in a reeducation camp for a few years.

I'll be hawt by Christmas though. I hope anyway.

I do think the vast majority are fat because of laziness AND overeating. There are other reasons sure. Like meds and gland problems. If you have any data to support your statement then by all means lets see it.

So then...you've just been another obese person who's also been raising health care costs?

I have no medical problems that I'm aware of. I've never been the type of person to over eat. I had to find what worked for my body. I'm just now finding this out after years of being heavy, and trying a ton of other things. I'm sure I can't be the only person like that.

Some women have a very difficult time losing weight after the birth of a child.

Some people have emotional problems that lead to overeating. Yes it's still overeating, but not because of a lack of will power.

Some people have medical problems that make exercise impossible.

There are lots of other reasons.

I'm a thin thinking person now. If you think thin you'll be thin.

Did you walk today?

Shit I spent the morning chasing a eight and four year old. We've been walking four laps around our local track every other day. I just don't have the time everyday. Four laps is two miles. I let the kids take their bikes, which means more often than not I'm running to keep them from running other people over.

The problem with the discussion in this thread is that people took personally what began as a discussion of a macro-level issue. This seems to happen a lot in such discussions. The OP was about concerns regarding large numbers of people and not about individuals. The OP was based on well-executed statistical analysis and not on anecdotal evidence. And yet people get the panties in a twist, often using their own life story's anecdotal evidence to refute the OP.

It's a shame, really, when otherwise generally reasonable and intelligent people fall prey to the lure of fighting large-scale statistical analysis with anecdotes and personal outrage.

Perhaps just rid the world of anyone with an IQ under 120.
Ummm...

115-124 - Above average
125-134 - Gifted
135-144 - Very gifted
145-164 - Genius
165-179 - High genius
180-200 - Highest genius

You want to rid the world of some of our above-average folks, TOO?

You 153 IQ elitist, you!

Your local track is a half mile in circumference? I gather this is not a typical track used for track and field competitions, as these are generally one quarter mile around.

Hell why not. (That statement was very tongue in cheek.)

No, it's not a track and field track. It's down by the boat docks. It's actually a circular drive that goes around the park. We just call it the track.

That's good but it would be nice if you could everyday. Even if it means getting up earlier. I've done the every other day thing and it's too easy to skip days here and there. Shit happens.

Now I do it everyday. Days I lift. Days when I might walk 9 holes of golf. I still do my 50 minute walk.

The main thing about eating is not to eat anything after 6pm. Wake up hungry and have a good breakfast.

You would become Congressman.

What works for me is making sure I eat. I skip meals way too often. I also had to cut out red meat, white bread, and processed sugar.

I can't go everyday. I work full time as a pediatric nurse, and that counts. I'm on my feet and lifting all day. I also have two kids, who are involved in their own activities.

Also in the process of going back to school. I'll start next month. My schedule is usually packed. I've had a pretty free day today as far as outside activities go. I have another two hours before I have to leave for work.:D

With a very similar schedule (reports to work for 7:30 a.m. and puts in 13-hour days four out of five every week), my wife gets up every day at 4:45 to make sure she has time for exercise. She and her sister have nearly identical body frames and genetic tendency toward being round. Both are 5' 4" in height. The sister weighs in at 325 and the wifely one is complaining about having edged up to 146. And that alarm clock at 4:45 goes off every day, even the ones where she was at her desk until 1 a.m. the night before.

Just saying that it's often a matter of priorities and being willing to stick to them to accomplish what you want in life.

Your wife is more woman that I am. My day starts at 5:45am. I get up get the kids dressed and fed, so Master can get them off to school. (Summer school now) I get myself dressed and am off to work. I have to be there at 7a. I get home around 4. Usually this is when we head off to the track. Then homework, which is about an hour. Dinner is next. Then bathe the kids and get them off to bed. That's when I clean the house, do a load of laundry, and sit for a minute. That's if we don't have Dr's appts etc. ( we have a lot of those for my special needs daughter)

Master and I usually come upstairs around midnight. I'd say an hour for bedroom activities and then asleep by 1a.

I don't sit at a desk all day at work. I'm on my feet all day at work.

I could get up at 4am to exercise. I choose not to. I can't function at a level I need to with only 3 hours sleep. It's not fair to my patients, and it's not fair to my kids or Master to not function.

I'm walking at least 6 miles a week. I don't feel guilty that I'm not doing more. I'm losing on average at least 2 pounds a week.

ETA I work swing shift. So I work dayshift through the week, and midnights on the weekends. So that schedule changes a bit on the weekends.

I will say again, BMI is garbage. There are loads and loads of people out there both with overweight/obese BMI's that are stunningly healthy*, and people with "normal" BMI's that are anything but. Calling an overly basic charting of height vs weight as "well-executed statistical analysis" is specious.

* - I have yet to get a response on the question of whether Pyrros Dimas is fat or not. If his example is too anecdotal, I will offer the members of virtually any football team, wrestlers, weightlifters, gymnasts, most serious basketball players, etc. In short, anyone with serious muscle on their frame, male or female.
