A vascectomy where I live costs 300$ cash. Who needs to have one?

I get calls from patients all the time asking me to arrange for them (or their husbands) to have vascectomies. I was curious so I called my fave urologist's office and asked. The quoted cost out of pocket is 300$. This is less than a year of birth control pills.

And it is done in office and takes a few minutes and I've never actually met a guy who regretted it. (I am sure there are some, but I would guess they are rare.)

So.....now that you know how affordable it is, does anybody plan to call a doctor to set one up now? (BTW--it would be a UROLOGIST that you call. Some GP's still do them, but not so often.)

I know someone who had his reversed, and it worked too.

Anyone who is done having babies should consider it. It is fast and simple for the man. It is an operation for the woman. If a man forces his wife, woman, whatever, to get one, then I don't have a lot of respect for him. And he doesn't for her.

The odds are really low, but she could die. He is just going to have a boo boo for about two weeks.

Yes they can be reversed, actually quite easily, so you wont shoot blanks!

But then again no one is touching PING n PONG while I am still breathing...lol;)

We've talked about this a few times but never made any solid decisions yet. My partner does agree that it would be easier for him to have a vasectomy than for me to have a tubal ligation. I've had health issues over the past year and that really scared us. Right now he doesn't have a doctor and I'm trying to get him to see mine.

sabbathstorm the actual procedure for a man is really easy.

It gets embarrassing later when he has to bring in samples. I had to bring them in until I had three 'clean' ones.

Promise you will help him, and even tell him you will drop them off. That would have taken a big heavy load off of my mind. I felt silly walking around with a brown bag with a plastic cup in it. Then giving it to the girl behind the desk... Here take my sperm...

$5 on my insurance plan at the time, my general practitioner performed the task in around 40 minutes, I walked out, but I didn't drive. No stitches were necessary. I had to take in one sample in 8 weeks, they called me, told me I was clean, that was that. Really a great thing if a couple is done, quite cheap and painless. I'm not sure I could have afforded the $300 at the time, but we probably would have found a way.

I have to ask...

If a vasectomy where you live costs $300, how much is one where you don't survive?

I would like to get it done but it don't have the money to spare for it right now.
My SO is pregnant and this will make our 4 youngin.
Her insurance covers the operation for her.If by any chance i get the money before she has the baby, i'm gonna have the procedure done.

Hell, that wouldn't embarass me at all. I just hope the nosy folks around town don't get the wrong idea ;)

Actually I need one, I'm about 3yrs too late (glancing at todder).

I should get one...in the event my spouse and I were to actually have sex it would come in quite handy.

What are some of the questions you should ask a urologist when deciding which one to choose?

I have to admit..it scares the living shit out of me to think of someone doing something to the boys, but i need to suck it up and...ummm...be a man?

Strangely enough...

... i have just made my appointment to see the GP...

snip..snip..snip...:)

It has been two years since I 'got fixed'. Can't tell I ever had anything done. Sure don't feel any different.

If anything we have sex more often, no fear, no need for creams, sponges, stupid rubber thingies, etc, etc..

Just make sure you ask for a couple of valium to take before you go in to have it done. Hell he could have cut the 'boys' off and threw them around the room for all I cared. Wanna see my balls, well come on in! It did seem like every nurse in the place came in and out at one point.

As I have said before, felt kinda bad for a week, waited two, then no pain.

My doc wanted three clear samples in a row, one sample a week. The more you have sex, the faster you clear the tubes out. And I did admit it was hard to walk through the hospital with my bag O sperm. They give you a whole mess of those specimen cups and lids. They even gave me some cute little grey bags to bring my stuff in. But there was a huge ad for the doc on the side, so I used old brown lunch bags.

No more fear of babies. Not that I don't want babies. I have a brother who is 9 years younger than me. We never really bonded. He was a big surprise. I did't want to have a surprise like that.

Any more questions, that you don't want to ask on the board, PM me and I'll be as honest as I can be.

Evilbrat, you need to leave Sweetbrat alone until you get your self fixed. You're gonna kill that poor girl :D .

I have given it a lot of consideration, but can never go through with it. I have 4 children & no desire at this time for more. However at 32, I feel too young for it???

Maybe I am just looking for a excuse not to do it???

Right now she is 4 months pregnant.
We have been searching for a collage near by that does the procedure for free.
Ya know, as a learning procedure for med students.
I haven't had any luck yet.
I would really like to have it done before she gives birth.
If i don't get it done before then, sex is gonna be a stressed experiance.I don't want her to have the sergery.
Mabe i'll get a big raise at work this year.
LOL
I doubt it though.
Mabe someone could help me find a collage near north eastern Kentucky that does this procedure for free.
We would be greatful.
:)

Southern,

To locate a urologist, call your PCP (Primary Care Physician). It is also worthwhile to look and see who is on your insurance plan--almost every major insurance company now has a website. If you have an HMO plan, you will need a referral.

The procedure is so quick and simple that I would honestly not be too worried about making sure I had absolutely the best doctor in the entire known universe.

If you (or anyone) live near the lower Houston metroplex and want a suggestion, PM me and I'll be happy to suggest our two faves. One in a town near the one I work in is actually named Dr. Mount. No shit. I bet he does more vascectomies than anybody!

As far as cost goes, you can also call Planned Parenthood to see if they can offer any help or better pricing. Of course, your own PCP might be able to do it in the office as well.

My husband got a vasectomy less than 6 months ago only cost us $50 rest was paid by medicare in Australia. He was in and out of the doctors in 30 minutes I even went in with him and watch a little. He was sore and sorry for himself for about a week total but all's been fine since. He only had to take 1 sample in after about 20 ejaculations or about 6/8 weeks, that was all clear and he hasn't been back since. He also had 2 valium before the operation which helped him relax and had me wait on him when he got home giving him beer as he watched the tv all weekend.
By the way looking4fun he was only 30 and we have a friend who has 4 kids he was 25 when he got it done so if your finished having kids get it done, if your unsure about having more kids you can looking into freezing sperm to use at a later stage.

Maybe you are looking for an excuse, who knows?
I had it done when I was twenty-something.
Maybe it makes me the odd man out but I never saw it as making me any less of man, a man is not measured by(or at least he should not be measured by)his anatomy.

Of course I have no kids and never have sex so..

I never had a problem bringing in the sample, of course I would always glide in stoned anyway,so nothing bothered me then.

I had my tubes tied after the birth of my 4th child.. at the age of 27. The doc didn't want to do it. Kept giving me the excuse of "what if you lose a child, and want to have another one" (Like they are replaceable.. )

My SO had a vasectomy after he divorced his wife. They also have 4 kids. He didn't want to have anymore.

(We weren't together at this time, or I wouldn't have had it done)
I've had alot of medical problems stemming from the tubal. Hopefully soon they will be resolved.

He hasn't had any problems with the vasectomy. Well not with the second one anyway. First one for some reason didn't work. They had to re-do it. I understand this is an odd occurance. But he said it was just as easy the second time as the first. And he is glad he did it.
