A truly hypethical thread

I have thought twice about starting a thread in bdsm and here is what I have come up with.

I have a hypothetical for all of you readers:

I want to start a thread. It will be about.... mmmm.... movie actors/actresses and their possible bdsm leanings. (This thread, by the way has actually been done before, I am sorry I can't remember who did it.)

It could become a pretty indepth thread. For example, one could consider a certain actor, compare him to his on-screen roles, maybe discuss the director and how he might be trying to portray certain bdsm-like activities or thought processes... etc, etc.

It could also become kind of fluffy. Making jokes about certain actor's roles (remember Jim Carey in "Ace Ventura" and his funny dom-ly ways?)

Where do I put this thread?
Is it a fluff thread? Is it a serious thread?
Who determines what is fluff and what is not?
Do I ask someone where I should put it?
Is there a committee who decides where my thread should go? Will I have to await a PM of approval?
Will I awake one day to discover that it has been moved because I put it in the wrong "place?"

Consider it being your thread and not mine. Think about it and discuss if you like. I am interested in others opinions.

My first post in BSDM Fluffland

On boy, the Playground in leather with chains. Be still my beating heart.

Ok, I'll bite.

I think the Dirty Harry Callahan character had male potency issues. Look at the size of that rod he carried around, and he was always looking for someone to "make his day". Plus, he was a switch-hitter - he didn't care who he shot, but he seemed to prefer young Black males, so he may have had some unresolved childhood issues as well.

I hope this wasn't too far off topic. Or not.

Try this idea on for size and give me feedback, please.

Another thought/suggestion:

Instead of just moving things at the whim of the moderator, how about letting the readers of the forum decide.

In the other forums, there is a popularity contest where the various forums can be rated.
How about doing that here?
When the forum is rated 5 stars, it is moved. (Example only)

With the rating system, it is decided in a simple click by the people who have acutally made the effort to open the thread (and are thus involved in either reading, posting, or having their time wasted by misleading thread titles). No one else has to be involved. No one escessive arguements going on about the validity of that particular title. And it is not up to a single person to think for the rest of us--only those directly involved in that thread.

For those of you unclear-go to the following thread and try it out. You can post if you want, but there is no real need since this is just for experimentation--our fave hobby.
The Thread Rating System

Your link does not work so I am not able to experiment.

My only real issue is with the "popularity" aspect of this. I am not a popular poster nor apparently are my threads very popular. How will this star system make people feel about their worthiness to be posting threads here? Am I off base and don't fully understand the concept of it?

That being said... I guess this idea is worth a try, that is of course, if others want to also.

Oh phooey

For what it's worth, I like you, and I thought that this was a decent, if not necessarily stellar, thread idea. Then again, I can start a thread that'll drop like a rock off a mountainside.

Back on topic (God forbid), I always wanted to slap the snot out of Demi Moore. My favorite film she was in was "A Few Good Men", where she swapped no spit, grabbed no ass, and stayed fully clothed throughout the entire film. I can remember seeing it in the theater when it first came out, and I was scared that she might get nekkid. It just wasn't in the script, so there is proof that God exists.

For what it's worth...

Everything YOU say to me has value.

You're a great pal to me, mbb. ;-)

Thank you, Dear.

May the weasels never nibble at your shoelaces and the armadilloes always stay out of your rhubarb patch.

I see you not only had your thread hyjacked
and hyjacked by the moderator
but you never got an answer

I think your threrad would go in the BDSM section

I think the answer was basically given on a different thread. I do think my questions are justified and I do think there will be grey areas of confusion for some.

I guess we will see.

I am still unclear on this rating system and I am not sure until I see how it works, whether I am in favor of it or not. As I said, I think anything that smacks of "popularity" also will become part a tool for a few (as in a clique.) I will reserve judgement that I would put in cement until I see for myself.

Glad as always to see you here Richard. ;-)

Thank you

and that is what the rating thing would be is a
a popularity thing

I am still shaking my head here
at the dishonesty that has been displayed by some
mostly cause I trusted them

Goes on to tprove that I am not only not safe in picking
women/submissives .... I am not safe picking other type people to trust

I still see my questions are ignored and there is still no adequate way to try out this star system.

I also see is that if you present a differing view in here you are told to grow up, to stop throwing fits, to give it a chance and learn to accept change or move along. Make a rational statement of disagreement and those are the things you are told.

From my perspective, I have not said anything like that to anyone who has disagreed with me. I am sorry to see that this has become so divisive to so many.

If I want to post here then I will accept the changes that have been made. That does not mean I like them, it means I accept it and will work with it. But if this star system is what I suspect it will be, I think it will cause harder and more hurt feelings and less threads and postings.

Maybe I will have an answer or 2 when I get home today.

How about not expecting everyone to drop everything to respond to you immediately, first off? Good grief--it takes time for those of us who actually have lives and jobs to respond to questions. Give us some fucking time before bitching about being ignored, will ya?????

I will re-explain my suggestion in simpler terms. If you still don't understand, instead of posting over and over about how you feel ignored, let me have the time and I will re-explain again. (A day is a good time frame. )

1.) You stated in the first post here that you were unsure of where this thread should go. I would assume that this is the reason the moderator has suggested we try the rating idea.

2.) The star rating allows us to show how we feel about the thread. Instead of using the stars to vote about how much you like it, the suggestion I made is for us to vote on its appropriateness to the forum. The way this works is that I open the thread. I read it. If I determine that this is a bullshit thread that does not belong here, I will vote 5 stars. If enough people also vote 5 stars, this will alert the moderator that several people think this is inappropriate to the forum. If you think it is perfect, you can either not vote, or vote a 1 star. Each person gets only one vote. Popularity is not the key.

3.) This is as good a place as any to try out this possible system, expecially since you asked in your original thread about where this should be.

Does this make sense now?

(And, as for the link not working--you might try reading the original post to see that. When someone is quoted, the link is broken. You can do a search on my name with "show results as posts" if you want to see the exact one or *gasp* you might even find the thread I made about this. Hint-It's on the How-To board.)

Sorry, was out of town this weekend.

Anyway, the "thread rating" system is a potential tool to use to let the forum manage itself. However, like you, ADR, I would be concerned that posters may use the system to play games.

I understand it takes five votes of five stars to achieve the five star rating. Hmmmm perhaps, we should hold it to ten votes. Generally, I would say, that even in the biggest popularity situations, the forum isn't so big that ten negative and playful or malicious votes would be easily achieved.

Oh, and I do believe that in a situation where a thread may be moved, I should interact with the thread starter before doing anything. Yes....I have learned a lesson on that one. :)

There are times, also, where threads are hijacked by fluff. I am able to move posts only, as well. However, teh posts actually start a different thread. So, we could just move the offending posts somewhere.

So, this is a new idea and this hypothetical question is a good one to bring up the discussion. Thanks.

Where would you like to post your thread?

Any feasible ideas are welcome.

:)

Where would I like to post what thread? Are you suggesting I make a thread or use this thread as a kind of prototype for the star system, like an example for others to see? If that is what you are suggesting, I have no problem with doing that. I might be misunderstanding you, though. And if I am, let me know. I have told you that I am willing to try this system and see how it works for the community as a whole.

As far has fluff is concerned, I have never complained on the boards or to you in PM about fluff on threads or fluff threads or Hop on Pop, for that matter. I can scroll past fluff if it annoys me. It is something I don't engage in, to speak of and I have said that many times before, but I don't care what others do and I am able to avoid or ignore or scroll past those things, if they bother me. This place (Lit) is for everyone, there is room for all ideas and there is something for everyone here.

No, not a prototype.

I was wondering which forum you would want to post your thread on.

Assumably, if people want to post to it, you will have put it in the "right " place and will know by responses.

In fact, what about that being the "protocol?" Post where you want and let the forums develop on their own?

Not an original idea, but I haven't moved anything since Friday and it seems that both forums are managing well and taking on their own character.

:)

I don't want to do anything with the thread star system yet, as it does seem awfully confusing and if used, needs some tweaking.

ONe of my concerns would be those who rate threads elsewhere might think they are doing a favor by giving a thread five stars.

I meant nothing by the "fluff" comment. I wouldn't take a thread such as you described and call it fluff, at least in my own opinion.

Actually the purpose of this thread has now been addressed by you. It was hypothetical questions and I think you have answered them. If I choose to start a thread in the future I will pick where I want it to be and see from there, what happens with it.

Thank you MissT.

I actually thought you wanted to talk about the movies...

Speaking of movies...have you ever seen Monty Python's "The Life Of Brian"?

This place often reminds me of the People's Front of Judea scene:

BRIAN:
Are you the Judean People's Front?
REG:
Fuck off!
BRIAN:
What?
REG:
Judean People's Front. We're the People's Front of Judea! Judean People's Front. Cawk.
FRANCIS:
Wankers.
BRIAN:
Can I... join your group?
REG:
No. Piss off.
BRIAN:
I didn't want to sell this stuff. It's only a job. I hate the Romans as much as anybody.
PEOPLE'S FRONT OF JUDEA:
Shhhh. Shhhh. Shhh. Shh. Shhhh.
REG:
Schtum.
JUDITH:
Are you sure?
BRIAN:
Oh, dead sure. I hate the Romans already.
REG:
Listen. If you really wanted to join the P.F.J., you'd have to really hate the Romans.
BRIAN:
I do!
REG:
Oh, yeah? How much?
BRIAN:
A lot!
REG:
Right. You're in. Listen. The only people we hate more than the Romans are the fucking Judean People's Front.
P.F.J.:
Yeah...
JUDITH:
Splitters.
P.F.J.:
Splitters...
FRANCIS:
And the Judean Popular People's Front.
P.F.J.:
Yeah. Oh, yeah. Splitters. Splitters...
LORETTA:
And the People's Front of Judea.
P.F.J.:
Yeah. Splitters. Splitters...
REG:
What?
LORETTA:
The People's Front of Judea. Splitters.
REG:
We're the People's Front of Judea!
LORETTA:
Oh. I thought we were the Popular Front.
REG:
People's Front! C-huh.
FRANCIS:
Whatever happened to the Popular Front, Reg?
REG:
He's over there.
P.F.J.:
Splitter!
GOLIATH:
[pant pant pant] Ooh. Ooh. I-- I think I'm about to have a... cardiac arrest. Ooh. Ooh.
SPECTATOR:
Absolutely dreadful. Hmm.
CROWD:
[cheering]
REG:
Yes, brother! Ha ha. What's your name?
BRIAN:
Brian. Brian Cohen.
REG:
We may have a little job for you, Brian.

I have to say, the typo in the title of this thread makes me giggle every time I see it.
