We're watching "O Brother Where Art Thou" again for the first time in years.

Now, I've read The Odyssey, although admittedly years ago, but I just now realized that the movie is based on it.

Duh!

Please tell me I'm not the only dumbass...

Please tell me you're joking about this Tom-Tom Girl.....I've never seen anything as obvious as this.

I gotta tell ya....that's one of my favorite movies....

I was told about the Oddysey connection prior to seeing the movie. Now I feel cheated on the whole Ahhhhhhhhhh! thing.

I'm a Dapper Dan man, dammit!

I've never read The Oddesy, but I also had heard that before I had seen the movie. Before it was out in theaters too, actually...

"M'hair!"

I haven't even watched that movie yet.

Does that mean I deserve a double "duh!" ???

I knew before hand. After all the other movies doing modern takes on Shakespeare and Jane Austen (some good, some not-so-good), it was really refreshing to see this *very* unique take on the Odessey instead. Raising Arizona is still my favorite Cohen Brothers movie, but Brother and Fargo are true masterpieces.

Bit of trivia on the title:
The title of the film is a reference to a plot element in a satirical 1941 film, directed by Preston Sturges, called Sullivan's Travels, where the protagonist (a director) wants to direct a film on the Great Depression called O Brother, Where Art Thou? that will be "...a commentary on modern conditions, stark realism, the problems that confront the average man... with a little sex in it." Lacking any real experience as an average man, the director sets out on a journey to experience the human suffering of the average man but is constantly returned to his rich Hollywood environment. The director's experience and intent in Sullivan's Travels are the opposite of the disadvantaged heroes in O Brother, Where Art Thou? who wish to return home and are constantly being diverted from it.

Actually, the Odessey tie in was in the promos before it was shown, as I recall. And in the reviews afterwards.

The soundtrack CD kicks ass--some wonderful bluegrass and gospel music that everyone will enjoy.

John Goodman playing the 'Cyclop's --Klansman' was one of my favorite parts in the movie. ;)

I love the sirens, especially when they turn Pete into a frog. :D

Dino: you really need to watch it. It's well worth the purchase price just to have the dvd. The entire movie rocks. I'm not a George Clooney fan, but in this movie, he really does a helluva job.

*gasp*

George Clooney is in it?!

I'm gonna rent it...soon, very.

yep, and John Goodman, and a host of others. The soundtrack is great, too.
Hey!

They've played this movie on TV several times. Yet somehow I've always managed to NOT watch it.

It's funny as shit, but in a you-really-have-to-pay-attention way, not slapstick type.

Well, your not the only dumbass. Guess I'll have to revisit the Odyssey. I loved O Brother.

Thank you. :)

Cool movie, eh? I'm still giggling over them realizing how old they'll be when they get out of prison: "I'll only be 82."

Paying attention? That's something I can do. :)

You can also see a rebuilt version of the original Evil Dead house near the end of the movie. It's not THE original house, which burned down in the mid 80s. But it was built to look exactly like it. One of the Coens did sound editing on Evil Dead.

Wasn't Evil Dead built on several premises the writers had about such movies:

The good must suffer
Seven out of 10 must die
Evil must be punished

...or something like that...

I'm a dumbass too... *Signs club membership papers*

However, I hated the movie. Loved the job the actors did though. :D

Maybe? I don't remember everything I've heard and read about it (which is quite a lot).

I adore that movie. Even though it is based on The Odyssey, there were many things that surprised me and so few movies are able to do that for me that it is a real treat.

I have the movie and the soundtrack. :rose:
