So, in what circumstances is it alright for you to cheer on a team that isn't from your city?

Normally I'd say none. But, to be fair, I think I have to reconsider that. I think there are two

1: Growing up in a city where there is no team in a league you follow. See, I'm an NFL fan and I wanted to cheer on a specific team(Is following a league fun with no favourite team?) and well, unless Paul Godfrey gets his way, there isn't an NFL team here in the Big Smoke.

So, I had to choose a team.

2: If you live in a city where the owner has made the obvious decision to screw the fans of the team(Or The Cincinatti Bengals exception)

Other than that, isn't it just arbitrary? Don't you need something tying you to the team you cheer on besides, I don't know, how pretty their uniforms are?

There are many criteria to choose a favorite team only one of which is your home town. I'm loyal to my Colts and Pacers but it would be perfectly reasonable for another born and raised in Indy guy to cheer for the 49ers or any other squad.

Nawww, I doubt this. Otherwise, what constitutes being a fan of that team? Buying the Jersey and trying to catch the games on TV?

I think you have to live your fandom a little more.

Its probably fairly arbitrary, but it is kinda compulsury to have a soft spot for you local team... depending on how LOCAL local is.

What if you have a friend who is a player on said team?

Well that would have to be a recent development, wouldn't it? What team did you like before your friend made that team? Would you just drop them?

As a kid growing up in northern Alberta, I detested the Oilers because everyone loved them. The Flames wern't much of an option either because no matter how good they were, they'd always get beat by the Oil.

My first NHL game was back in 1986 ... Oilers vs North Stars in Northlands.. I was going to be damned if I cheered for the Oil.

Cheer for whoever you want to cheer for. If you like a specific player, root for his team. If you like a group of players, root for their team...yadda yadda. Who cares what city they're from.

So, you base your opinion of your team based on how much they win? Didn't you get all mad when I said you did this?

Jeez, you guys. Citizen Kane is just images on film. it's not like anyone cares or anything.

Can't I have 2 teams...they're in different conferences.

My boy just signed with them and I gotta cheer him on. (I even watched and followed Canadian Football when he was playing up there)

The Pats will forever be my favorite....now if only I could get his agent to set up a deal with the Pats my life would be fulfilled.

Well, no one says you can't have an affinity for more than one team. Who didn't want Ray Bourque to win last year?

But can't you like a player without liking his team?

I'll like whatever team that treats him well....OK as long as its not the Jets.

I could never forgive him for that.

No, I based it on the fact everyone loved the Oilers and I've never been one to be "one of the crowd"

As for the Flames, they won just as much as the Oilers did... I just didn't want to cheer for a team that everyone knew would always lose to the Oilers and hear it all the time from friends who were Oil fans about the virtues of the Oilers.

And no, I didn't get mad. You seem to like to tell yourself I did, but based on your sense of what a fan should be the more and more I laugh your comments off.

Sure but if his team and the pats played, wouldn't you rather the pats win but he has a good game?

Well, I've always prided myself on my ability to create laughter. You did start namecalling though.

Eh, I always liked the North Stars myself. They were like Hartford in that "Sort of Canadian" feel about them. Can't love either team in the new location though.

But as to being "one of the crowd" I think I've always based that more on things a little more substantial than what hockey team I like.

They played each other in the superbowl in '86. I don't know.

but that would be a Williams sisters dilemma for me wouldn't it?

I'm a vikings fan... they might be gone sooner or later. nooooooooooooooooooooo

Didn't the Minn. government just grant money to go towards a new park for the Twins?

I thought if the Twins were to get a park, the Metrodome was going to be renovated.
