A thought for President's Day

Actually a question: Why is Lincoln the only president with a car named after him?

Curiously, the forerunner of the Lincoln was the Grant Motor Car Corp, purchased by Lincoln Electric Co in 1923

The deal to buy the Findlay Motor Co., 400 Santee Ave., by the Grant Motor Co. of Detroit, Mich., was closed on November 25, 1913. It was anticipated that within future years 250 men would be needed for the building of the Grant, to sell for $495.

On June 5,1923, the Grant Motor Car Co. of Cleveland was sold to Lincoln Electric Co. and the former company was dissolved.

One company - three Presidents - Lincoln, Grant and Cleveland.

Edited to add - I'm wasting time before a flight :D

Well, technically, seeing as each new year brings a few new models of cars, every president has had a car named after him.

(Sorry, it's a very slow morning. Will this count towards my progress for AH Dork of the Year competition?)

I'm just waiting for president Pinto.

Edited to add: And what about President Nova?

Interesting. I really didn't do a lot of research to see how many, if any, early automobiles were named after Washington or some other President I just noticed that Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealers were playing up the Lincoln connection in their ads this weekend and couldn't think of any other models in the last fifty years or so with a presidential name.

There was a Studebaker model called "President" back in the 20s. 30s and 40s. Thus, it could be said that every President had a car named in his honor.

Was that named for Pres. Pierce or did it just happen to have a similar name?

The Pierce Aroow cars were manufactured by George N. Pierce. They were large, powerful cars of the time, including an 824 cubic inch engined version that is still the largest production automobile engine ever. The Pierce Arrow car company went into bankruptcy during the great depression.

Lincoln wasn't actually named for Honest Abe either. ;)

Not directly, no.

But, based on neolyte's history of the Lincoln name, it was appaently named for a place that was named for Honest Abe -- so indirectly named for him.

I'm still purring over the image of Lincoln sleeping with the captain of his security staff.
