OOC: Please PM me if you would like to join me in this tale of love.

Even from a distance he caught my eye. He was long and walked with a purposeful stride. His grey coat fluttered behind him, trying desperately to catch up to his long legs. As he grew closer, I saw that his head was mostly grey, yet there still was a few persistent black hairs determined to hang on.

I couldn’t help wondering who he was, this stranger who piqued my interest. My own steps became bolder, matching his, drawing him closer to me. I imagine him to be the one, my other half, my true love. But how will I know? He’s just a passing stranger. Then I wondered. What if my true love, my destiny was someone who had passed me by already? What if I missed my chance yesterday, or last month, or even a year ago and I’m still searching for him? What if this man walking towards me is the one?

The questions swirling around me made me slow down. I wanted to take a good careful look at the man who is about to pass before me. Right before he was before me, I had decided, “He was handsome. He certainly could be my type. Another step and he will be gone…”

I smiled. It was a secretive, full of promises smile. Caught by surprise, he smiled back. He was beautiful.

Then he passed me.

I continued on. I can feel him turn and continue to smile at my back. His smile pierced through my raincoat making my heart flutter in the cold rain. My eyes closed for a brief moment, reveling in the thought… He was the one.

Then a voice coming from behind woke me back to reality…

“Hello…”

I knew it was him. I turned slowly and saw his blue-grey eyes, shining warmly on this damp, cold day.

“Hello?”

“Would you like to have dinner with me?” He asked me, his eyes memorizing my face.

“Why would I have dinner with you? I don’t even know you.” I wanted to have dinner with him. Oh why can’t I just be bold enough to say yes?

“Because upon first glance.. I knew I wanted to get to know you.”

“Upon first glance? A three second glance?” Was it even three seconds, I wondered.

“Yes, listen… I know we don’t know each other. We don’t even know each other’s names, but I would really like to have dinner with you… tonight. Let’s meet tonight at 8 o’clock at this very spot and we can go from here, ok? Just dinner. And if we survive dinner, we can exchange names. Please?”

I stepped off the curve to cross the street. At the intersection, I turned to him and nodded my head.

But as the day grew on, I wondered, “Will I meet him? Would he even be there?”

Waiting at 8 o'clock

As I stood in the cover of an eve at a
shop near the intersection were I had
asked her to meet with me. I pulled back
my cuff to glance at my watch. It was 7:50.
I was a tad early, waiting with anticipation.

Why did I ask this lovely stranger to meet
me for dinner? Was It that I was tired of
eating alone? Was I that hungry for company?

I replayed our passing moment over and over
in my mind. She was elegant and walked with
such grace. Her smile said a lot, yet She didn't
say enough. Was she going to show?

I checked my watch again. It was now 7:52.

A Stranger's smile

I pulled up my collar as the wind blew.
Glanced down the street to my right, then
to my left. Folded my arms, leaned into the wall.
A fixed stare at the side walk as I pondered.

Had another love slipped by? Was there a
fleeting thread in life, and if you don't grasp
the right wind, your destiny changes?
Was this lady some ones soul mate, and
for me it would be just a date? Had I become
so desperate to ask perfect strangers to dinner?
When I was young the theory was, if you don't
ask you'll never know. With this in mind, I felt
better about my bold chance encounter.

I pulled my sleave back again. Checked my
watch. It was 7:55. Time seem to go by so slow.
As my anticipation grew.

The day was full of sales calls, urgent emails, and thoughts of him. Somehow, somewhere between the sidewalk and to my office, the memory of his face faded. Or maybe I really never did get a good look. I couldn’t remember. I just remembered his piercing blue grey eyes shining brighter than the grey day.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to meet him. Yet my body went through all the motions of preparing for a date. I felt like an 18 yr old, giddy with anticipation, but I kept telling myself… I won’t go, he won’t be there. We were just passing strangers.

At 7:59, with a roller coaster heart and a twisted stomach, I stood across the sidewalk, under an eave of a used bookstore and watched for my stranger to appear.

The sidewalk was empty.

8:00, no one showed up. I will give him five minutes.

Finally at 8:02, a walking figure was nearing close. I knew right away, the silhouette was wrong… It was a shorter woman walking a tiny dog.

My heart fell.

A Stranger's smile

Looked at my watch again, it was 8:04.
"She's not going to show," I told my self.
It was a dumb idea, asking a stranger to
meet me for dinner. Why didn't I give her
my phone number? I didn't even notice if
she had a wedding band. It all happened
so fast.

I noticed a used bookstore across the street.
Figured I'd go over there and brouse their
selection. Perhaps that would give her the
extra time. The hustle of the city life some
times ties is up. I could only be hopefull.

As I got to the corner, I checked my watch
again, it was 8:05. My heart was sinking,
but I told myself to be optomistic.
As I crossed the street and hopped up
on the curb. Turned towards the bookstore,
I caught a glimpse of a lady in waiting.
My heart sang as I was sure this was her.
I steadied my stride as I walked up towards
her.

My watch read 8:04, he didn’t show up. He was probably married, I assumed. Or just a passing moment. I turned to enter the bookstore, and noticed in the corner of my eye that someone was hurrying down the same sidewalk towards me.

When I turned and recognized the familiar silhouette, my heart leapt in the air. It was he. He, too, was watching the same spot waiting.

“Hello..” I called to him. The brisk walk made his cheeks rosy, and his eyes shiny. He waited to catch up to me and then greeted me with a “Hello.”

He was even more handsome than I remembered. And maybe even an inch or two taller. Even with my heels, I came to his shoulders. His hair wasn’t as grey as I remembered, and he possessed a youthful face.

I felt his eyes surveying me, too, trying to remember what I looked like. His eyes grazed down my raincoat and to my stocking legs. I sighed inwardly when he finally awarded me with a wide smile. I must have passed.

What now I wonder? Oh yes, dinner…

"Were you going in here?" He asked softly.

"I was about to, since I didn't see you at our spot."

"Oh. I was waiting for you to show up first." He smiled, his eyes twinkled devilishly under the glowing streetlamp. He turned to the door, his hand was reaching out ...

"Are you trying to get out of dinner?" I asked, laughing.

A Stranger's smile

He was delighted to see that she had
made it. She was more lovely than he
had remembered. And was sure of his
reasons why he asked her for dinner,
she was beautiful. She awaited by the
used bookstore, and just out of site from
where he had stood and waited.

His heart pounded as he aproached
her. The lump in his throat made it hard
to greet her. But he swallowed a couple
times and cleared his throat. Them spewed
out a Deep and hardy "Hello."

She returned the greeting. He wasn't
quite sure what to do. She seemed to
want to on to dinner, and yet she was
glanceing in the shop. Perhaps a nervous
jesture.

He reached for the door knob to the used
bookstore to open it.

("Are you trying to get out of dinner?" She asked.)

Startled and nervous he replied, "Oh no...not at
all."

Was this a hint to get on with the meal.
Maybe she was hungry. In all the anticipation,
he hadn't planned very well. "Where to go," he
thought. There was a little chinnesse restaurant
just down the street. He thought he'd throw that
at her and see. As he looked around he saw a
Bistro across the street but most of their tables
were out side and it was cold and windy. Twitching
nervously he shuffled his long legs and feet. Looked
down at her. Her doe like eyes took his breath away,
but he managed to gasp enough air to straighten
his tall frame. A smile crawled across his face.

"Any place in particular you'd like to go?" He asked

So he didn’t have a plan. Well neither did she. She didn’t even know if she would show, or if he would even…

Then she wondered… does he have a habit of picking up women on the street? Did he think she was an easy pick up? The last thought made her blush. The thought of her being an easy pick up was ludicrous, except for that one time….

A cold wind snapped her back to reality and to man standing before her, smiling broadly, his eyes grew wide in fascination with the emotions coursing through her face. Caught under his stare, her blush deepened. The cold wind whipping around her face couldn’t stop her blush from transferring down her neck.

“Uhmmm… what if we go to your favorite restaurant?”

Uh oh… she thought. He didn’t look comfortable with that idea

“Uhmmm… what if we go to your favorite
restaurant?” She said.

A smile grew over his face, not only did this
confirm that she had showed. But she was going
with him. All doubts were vacant now.

The whipping wind and nipping cold was a
reminder to hurry up, to get out of the elements,
if this was going to be an enjoyable evening.

"How about... Lee's Humble House of Japanesse
cuisine. It's two blocks up and they have great
service." I asked. Watching her eyes to see if they
light up, or narrow from dislike. But He thought
he saw a small smile cross her face.

He leaned his tall frame into her, in a sheltering
manner as he placed his hand on her back to a
light guideing way. As they began to walk. He
tryed to keep the winds fury from her as he stood
a bit behind her.

The streets were still damp and pools of water
layed scattered along the road. As the lights of
the town bounced off of them. A few cars went by
as he realized he hadn't introduced himself yet.

Standing at the street corner, waiting for the light,
He steps in front of her and extends his hand.
His tall frame towered her with his hand outreached.
He heard the sound of a car rushing by behind him.
And a loud "splash," as a wave of water showered
his back. He felt the water dripping and running from
his frame, as he looked to see if she had been
assaulted with this wave. Seeing that she wasn't
and that he had taken the gush of water with his coat.
He thought he heard a slight giggle come from her.
Attempting to wiggle droplets off myself.
So he let out a laugh, extending the hand even
closer to her.

"Hi, I'm wet...I mean Wayne." He said.
He had a dozen thoughts go thru his head but
his eyes were still on this lovely lady.

The corners of her lips quivered, trying to hold back the laughter. When he introduced himself, she threw her long auburn tresses back and released an operatic laugh. They stood there, holding hands and giggled like little school girls.

From a distance, they looked like mad. They were the only ones daring enough t be out in this miserable weather. Only they didn’t know that. They were blind to the vacant streets while their bodies shook with laughter.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Wet Wayne. I’m Cold Natalie.” All previous shyness had disappeared while she joked back.

Still they were strangers. They had both forgotten that. Only for a brief interlude.

“Why don’t we go to my apartment. So you can dry off and we can order a take out.” She offered, then regretting it as soon as the words fell from her lips.

Was she too forward?

A Strangers Smile

(“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Wet Wayne.
I’m Cold Natalie.” All previous shyness
had disappeared while she joked back.)

"Hello cold Natalie," he smiled at her wit, and
sensual coy way of dealing with his missap.
As he continued to shake off the droplets
of water off of him.

(“Why don’t we go to my apartment.
So you can dry off and we can order
a take out.” She offered, then regretting
it as soon as the words fell from her lips.)

He looked at the sky, and back at her as he
pulled up his collar, it was getting colder.
And his wet clothes made it worse, so he was
ready to get out of the elements and into
a warm enviorment. And her place was
probably closer than his.

"Ok, if you don't mind?" He said questionably.
"Are you sure?" He added, the idea of going to
her place sparked a fire in him, that almost
warmed him.

He put his arm at her back and followed her as
she headed up the street. Her trembleing hands
told him she was nervous. Even though it was
cold, he could tell the difference by her fidgeding.
He knew she wasnt in the habit of asking men
to her place. She didnt seem like that type of
person, she was being nice and thoughtful.
A trait that he found refreshing.

"Shall I hail a cab, Natalie? Or is it very far?"
He asked.

Towered over her he tryed to keep the cold
wind off of her. His large hand at her
middle back. He hoped his tall build wasnt
intimidating, and his deep voice wasnt frail.
She was small and he didnt want to frighten
her at all, he was as gentle as a lamb, following
to her place.
