a strange question

Someone asked me something the other day and I had no idea how to answer her. Maybe some of you can help me. She wanted to know how deep into her vagina she could put her finger (or other items) before getting to her hymen. She doesn't want to break it, but wants to get inside a bit. I had no idea how to answer this since I broke mine already, probably climbing trees or riding my bike as a kid. Can any of you help me out so I know what to tell her? Thanks

Well I don't know how it actually was broken. I've just heard that is one way it can. Anything athletic or physical I've heard can do it. I was a total tom boy as a kid and mine is broken so I guess I did it somehow.

Actually, this has come up a couple of times on the How To board lately. You can break your hymen in lots of ways that have nothing to do with sex or object insertion. I haven't heard of it happening riding a bike, but I wouldn't completely discount it.

I agree that it sounds like the sort of thing someone 18 would already know about her own body though.

Ok why are we talking about me here? I want to know what i should tell this girl. I know mine is broken because I masturbate. The first time I did it slid all the way in and nothing stopped it so I knew my hymen was already gone. Like I said must have happened a long time ago, but that has nothing to do with this thread

"Sex For Dummies"-- my personal bible, says that it is possible to break your hymen on a bicycle if you hit a hard bump or positition yourself wrong on the seat.

I personally don't know how far in you can go without breaking it, but, I'd say it has a lot to do with the size of the object you're using.

The hymen is located at the outer rim of the vaginal opening. It causes the vaginal opening to be smaller. In most cases the hymen is just a thin sheath of skin covering the bottom part of the vaginal opening which is stretched when something larger than the opening (hole) is inserted.

The hymen can be broken [it is not usually broken but stretched or torn (this is why some women bleed with first penetration and some do not), remember it is usually very thin] by inserting two fingers, a penis, a dildo, etc. depending on how large the vaginal opening is and how much of the opening is covered by the hymen. Or, it can be stretched by pressure in that area: riding a horse or bike frequently or for long stretches of time.

Some women have a very small hymen and it is hardly noticeable. It does not interfere with intercourse and causes no pain nor bleeding.

Tell your friend that her hymen is not inside her vagina, Kiki, so she needn't worry about how far to insert anything. Her only concern, if she wants to keep her hymen intact is how large in diameter it is. I would suggest that she get a good-sized hand mirror and examine herself so that she can become familiar with her body. It is her body and is empowering to know what everything looks like. I taught my daughter this way.

I'm curious as to why this is so important to her. As I understand it the concept of retaining one's hymen is linked directly to cultural values. Am I right in thinking that it is often an important factor in societies which revolve around doweries and arranged marriages... ?

Not necessarily. There are a lot of people here in the States that place a good deal of stock on a girl retaining her virginity until marriage. Granted, most are very conservative and religious, but that is certainly no "requirement".

Some women are just curious, others have the idea that they want to remain "intact" for their husbands, still others don't care. Depends on the woman.

I don't know if a person can really tell tell their hymen is broken, unless it IS in fact broken. I had masterbated for years using different objects to insert etc... I also used tampons. I assumed my hymen was broken, but when I had sex for the first time I dicovered I was wrong. Unless you actually feel it breaking and see the blood you can never really be sure.

Just remember that a lot of time, the hymen doesn't even bleed.

The thickness of the hymen varies from woman to woman. Some are extremely thick and have to actually be removed surgically. Some are so thin to be non-existant. Some woman are born without them in the first place.

In the Sex Ed class I took in College, we learned a LOT about hymens. I don't remember everything, but I do remember they are a lot like snowflakes. Two are never alike.

A friend of mine and me was both straddling a swing with a swing between us. We was pushing the swing between us back and forth and i missed and the swing hit my swing hard and i doubled over.
When i got home i noticed a small amount of blood in my panties and being a girl who was clueless to what a hyman was my first thought was im never going to have kids when im older..... NEEDLESS to say, i did only 24 yrs later.
So it is possible to break a hymen riding a bike.

if she uses tampons it is already gone. She may have had next to nothing for a hymen to begin with. But it is not very deep into your body.
