I'm starting my first story. It is set in the Roman Empire with a male protagonist. Whenever they get around to approving it, you will all be able to take a look. But in the meantime, I want to know what you think about the concept. If most find it's a huge turn-off, then, perhaps, I shouldn't be spending time doing it. On the other hand, if many people like it, I'll be more inspired to continue it ;) So, tell me what you think.

Well, I think it's a cool idea for a setting, but knowing nothing else about it it's hard for me to say whether I'd find the story interesting or not.

I don't know if you're a student of Imperial Rome, but if I may offer a humble suggestion, a little minimal research to keep your story true to its era will aid considerably in helping it find its proper tone.

Great!

I'm delighted to hear someone likes the idea. I have seen no such stories on Chyoo, and feared nobody liked them.

As for research, I don't specialize on Rome or even history, but I think I know quite a lot about it. I have always been interested in the subject. Of course, I don't know enough to create characters' adventures with perfect historical accuracy in every little detail and you may find occasional slips such as characters addressing each other "Sir". However, I think I kept to the spirit of the period and there is enough historical accuracy to satisfy an average reader.

I try to make the story as much about adventure as it is about sex. After all, "erotic" is only part of "erotic adventure". Here is a little non-erotic teaser for you all:

Of course, we have such a miracle up our sleeve. A cavaleria centuria, one hundred elite horsemen, led by me, General {FIRST_NAME} {LAST_NAME}, is hidden in thick woods just off the field.

“General, are you sure we will be enough?”

This young Sicilian is my brother-in-arms and friend Marcus. If he is nervous, I can only imagine what the other men must feel. I speak slowly without turning my head from the battlefield: “You doubt me, Marcus?”

“No, no sir, I just…”
“Good.”

I agree with Gystex.
Else it'll be just another story, but with "Rome" instead of "New York" in the header. :p

But yes, all in all, I'd be interested in such a story. It'd be nice to know when exactly it is set, for the Roman Empire of -200 is very different from the Empire of the first century, which is in turn much different from the Empire of the 4th century... :)

Love the Idea

I'm all for the idea. I think it would be fun to write to that era. I fully agree that it needs to ring true as to as many details as possible.

Count me in for thread addtions when it gains approval.

:D

Thank you all for your support

It's nice to see people are interested.

OK, point about historical realism taken. I'm going to try my best in that respect. However, there's only so much I know and learing all the ins and outs of Romans' daily life would take a very, very long time.

If there's any experts on Rome who can recommend a reading of reasonable length, I'd appreciate it. By "reasonable length" I mean under one hundred pages.

Well, I guess we'll see how it goes when the story gets online.

Who needs to read? Just watch Gladiator a couple of times, follwed by Ben-Hur.

LOL :)

Well, if that's the level of historical accuracy you expect then I definately qualify ;) Watched Gladiator, played Caesar III, still remember quite a lot from HS history class and extra literature I read during that year because I was interested in the subject.
