A solution to 1 bombs?!

For the last week I've been expotentially more active at this board and one thing I've noticed is how prevalent the subject of the 1 bomb is.
I just had an idea the could reduce the 1 bomb to almost nothing if it's implimented.

Make voting a member's only feature. I think it'd cut back on the annoymous trolls. Since it's members who contribute to this site whether with thier own stories or if they're an avid reader of erotica, their voting would be more balanced and honest. Nothing will ever get rid of the bomb but I think this will keep people from getting shelled a lot more.

Comments? Opinions?

Good idea in theory, but there are a lot of wankers who happen to have Lit accounts and the systematic 1-bombers are probably in that category.

Couldn't hurt to try though.

The Earl

OK this is becoming a habit but i'm going to have to say I agree with The Earl. I think it sounds like a good idea in theory but it hardly takes much to sign up for a lit account and I would think alot of those who do the 1 bomb thing are members already and check out peoples posts on the message boards.

As long as you have voting you'll have those who vote maliciously. Unfortunately thats the way some people are.

The idea I had was that in order to vote you had to register with a valid e-mail and no more anonymous voting. They don't have to become a member but at least provide the author with a way to see who is bombing them and reply to it.

The reason these trolls get away with it is because they can do it anonymously. And in my oppinion ignoring them only encourages them. Having the bombs removed doesn't always help either. Not long ago I had a very persistant troll who would replace the bombs as fast as I could have them removed. Went on for a month and is still going on. I have the bomb removed and the next day it's back.

Completely agree with you here.

No matter how much you hear "just consider the source, and don't let it get to you," it still does. At least me, it does.

I've seen discussions about changing it to a 10 possible votes sytem, only registered users, no anonymous voting, etc., etc., but I don't think anything that can be done here is going to change this basic fact:

Some people are just assholes who get off on putting other people down.

Yeah I realize you'll never eliminate the 1-bomb and that you'll never be able to keep out all the assholes.

Perhaps make voting a feature only for published lit authors?

It seems futile. I've yet to be 1 bombed but I know it's coming one day. Celeb Masseur right now is at 4.61 with 18 votes so I'm sure the 1 bomb is coming.
I guess it's just a rite of passage for lit heh. :(

One thing that no one has brought up. If a writer's stories are getting 1 bombed, than that author really has no chance to win any sort of award. In addition, a low vote score, caused by 1 bombs, may result in many readers bypassing the story because it is low rated.

The 1 bomber loses an author awards and even readers. Something needs to be done.

JMHO.

For contests, maybe, we could count Public Comments and the thermometer averages to find the winning story.

First, let the readers know that they must fill out a PC to take part in contest voting. That way each voter would have to give some identification, some sort of description (if only “Good,” “Average,” or “Bad.”) and a numerical vote.

As far as normal voting goes, however, I believe cloudy pretty much summed up the problem: “Some people are just assholes. . . . “

I know it really pisses me off when I have a story at 4.80 or higher and then suddenly it's down in the 3.X range.

I know who does some of the 1 bombing of my stories, but I have no idea what I did to piss that particular prick off.

I don't mind so much on a couple of my stories where I was trying to stretch outside of my usual genre, and I know full well that they are not up to my usual standards.
But even those usually get decent public comments or anonymous feedback.

As Cloudy and others have noted, Some people are just assholes.

I’ve read posts with formulae on how to find out whether a vote is a 1 or a 4, but beyond the first five votes, it just gives me a headache.

Still, I would like the chance to understand how you can tell who is doing the 1-bombing, even if you do not know why

It's simple to tell because the jackass almost always sends me feedback letting me know that he is the one who is one bombing my stories.
I just ignore him as best I can and try to get the one bomb removed.

I don't think making voting for users only or even authors only will help the voting problem. Random readers with no connection to Lit are not the ones out there trying to knock specific stories down. Not to mention, they're the most honest voters out there with no preconceptions of the person writing the story, good or bad.

Thats a good point, but something that I have never understood is why people think that every 1 they get is from a Troll, or is a 1-bomb.

What if the person honestly didn't like the story/poem. Things like that DO happen. "you'll never please every reader", I believe I've read something along those lines in the writers resources.

Now, knowing who voted for you, and why would be preferable, yes. Because then you could tell if you were being 'trolled', but honestly it will always happen.

I used to be a member of a "Rate My Picture" website, and they disabled 1s on there, because they found 1s threw off the count too much.... If you disable 1s, whats the point of having 10s??? The high number is meaningless without the low number.. If you could only get 2-5 here, 5s wouldn't mean as much.. We write and submit here with the knowledge that there might be people who dislike our works.. but there will also be people who enjoy it.

I had more to say, but it has fled my mind. Think thats enough for people to understand what I mean anyways.

:D

That's what generally gets me to end my posts, too. ;)

OH!

Tough luck :(

Please don't send him over to me.

I don't get much feedback, but except for one who REALLY didn't like my subject, they have all been very pleasant.

Well, as of today I submitted 2 new items, so I expect my personal troll will be paying me a visit again soon.

As it stands now, I think most voters give a four if the story is okay, a five if the story is good, and a one if the story is bad or if they're an ass. Two and three are probably really underused. So the effect of this is that the one actually carries a lot more weight than a five.
While I'm perfectly fine with the voting system on this website, I do think that a smaller number of choices tends to produce better voting results. Basically, a good/okay/bad rating system (removing the two and the four). Ratings in total probably won't be as high, but it's all relative anyway.

I had a hard enough time getting even the ten votes on my last story sumbission (seems novels/novellas is a slow cat). It was actually a 1 vote that made it reach 10 votes and earn a H. :)

Then Laurel did the sweep for troll votes. Guess what happened.

Ok, to the serious point of my post. Making voting a members-only thing...wouldn't that decrease the umber of votes quite drastically?

Exactly. And since the only people who care enough to be qualified as bombers are members already, it would only make it worse.

Considering the length of some stories, it would make sense to set up a counter at the end of the last page.

If the reader doesn't click back before that, the writer DESERVES a bloody 5
