Child: “Mom, when you were a little girl, did Mouse hide too?”
Mother: “When mom was little, she had a cat named Barry. Mouse was not born yet and he has only lived with your aunt and uncle.”
The child is pondering this for a bit, “Where is Barry?”
Mother: “He died.”
Child: “Like the baby squirrel?”
Mother: “Yes. All living things will die at some point.”
Child: “If we get a cat, will it die too?”
Mother: “Yes, at some point it will. But you hope not for a long time.”
Child: “It’s a big decision isn’t it?”
Mother: “What is?”
Child: “To love something that will die.”
Mother: “Yes, I suppose it is.”
Child: “But that’s life.”
Mother “In a nutshell, yes.”
I recorded this: my aunt telling her daughter (age 6) about cats and life. My cat's name is Mouse.
