Taboo is based on reality. Not so long ago, it was not a good idea to eat under done pork. Lots of coputer virus and stuff. Nowadays, TV chefs tell us it's ok to eat pork which is pink.
Imagin a stone age tribe experiencing desease due to eating under done pork. It's not so difficult to understand where taboo started. The same thing with mad and sacred cow. I don't know about the Cult of the Dead Cow.
