Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Mr. Common Sense.
Mr. Sense had been with us for many years.

No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such value lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn't always fair.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable Parenting strategies (adults, not kids, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Mr. Sense declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student; but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, and was awarded a huge financial settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

If you still remember him, pass this on; if not, join the majority and do nothing.

You'll never know how much I agree with your post.

Last week I was in a pub with my family and I happened to look over at a lovely old fireplace.

Printed on the stone wall above the grate were the immortal words:

Caution: This surface is hot.

What the hell else would it be???

janiexx:rolleyes:

Whithin five years, someone will sue because it wasn't printed on the flames.

I notice there's no metion of the loss of his grand child and name sake, Common Courtesy, in the same calamity that took his mother.

This is quite depressing, but thank you for sharing. :rose:

LOL - I am shocked you did not know he passed away YEARS ago!

I keep trying to revive him at our City Hall.

I sometimes get praise for my efforts but little success.

Recent examples:

1. A citizen reported that vehicles were driving down some footpaths. The Council responded by installing posts to stop vehicles. The way they were installed also stopped people in invalid buggies and wheelchairs. I had to campaign to get the posts realigned so that wheelchairs could get through. After six months, one of three sets of posts has been realigned.

The vehicles still drive down the footpaths, swerving around the posts on wet grass. What vehicles? The council's grasscutters!

2. The council wanted to stop travellers parking on the City's car parks. Their bright idea was to introduce a weight limit so that motor caravans couldn't park. They set the limit at 1.25 tonnes. I pointed out that they had banned most 4 wheel drive vehicles, most larger family cars, the Chief Executive's company car and the Mayor's limousine. I checked car makes and models in one City Centre Car Park and then referred to manufacturer's details. The council would have banned 47% of the vehicles in that Car Park. They changed the weight limit to 1.25 tonne payload.

The travellers still park in the City's car parks. When they get a penalty notice they ignore it because they don't have a permanent address and their vehicles are unregistered...

I try.

I read in my newspaper today of a man whose garden filled up with sand from a local beach after a storm.

He asked his council if he could gather it up in his wheelbarrow and take it back to the beach, but was told that if he did, he would be fined £50,000 or given six months in jail for fly-tipping.

In the end he had to pay £500 for a firm to take the sand away and dispose of it.

The poor man is well aware that another storm will just bring it all back...and he'll have to start all over again.

Yes - crazy Britain.
