In the same vein as citing your dislikes, here's a central location to praise what you love in a good poem.

Say what you enjoy in a good read. Be as specific as you can. This isn't a thread about individual poems though you can cite one as an example. We're looking for specific elements you enjoy seeing in a work. For instance, "I like poems that are direct, simply stated. I don't want to something that is a page long when it could be said in two stanzas"

Thanks for contributing to this effort.

Peace,

daughter

I like the poetry that isn't sugar coated. In other words, not hidden beneath pretty words. The ones that use a bit of harshness, or everday language to jump out and grab their readers.

tough one

I like a poem that is like a crystal. It cannot be made any other way without diminishing it. But, the most important trait is making me see something in a way that I never had before. To give a new dimension to something familiar. A great poem changes the way you see something.

challenging her own boundaries

Two of my favorite poets here are Wicked Eve and perky.

Lawd knows I've gotten on Eve's last nerve. I hounded the poor woman not to be satisfied. I gave her grief about being lazy and silly when what she was saying was something that really mattered.

That woman didn't whine nor back down. She experiments, participates, studies and reads. She has a natural talent and she honors it by honing her skills. Wicked Eve, gives us gems and blocks of coal, but she's always stretching beyond her comfort zone. I've witnessed it in her writing. Whether she hits the mark or not, she's always exciting to watch.

perky, my wild sister. Here's another woman who is true to her own voice and who has enough maturity and confidence to know that getting out one's comfort zone isn't selling self out. perky's defining her voice. When I read a poet, I want to recognize her voice. Yes, I want range, but I want to recognize a sound that is pleasant to my ears.

I applaud poets who are committed to their craft, and for me it means study, discipline, and effort. I can depend on these women to always demonstrate that in their work.

I applaud you, ladies.

Peace,

daughter

I like poems that have a nice feel in my mouth, that I can read out aloud to myself like sipping at a glass of nice wine. Shakespeare is great for this, for me. Not just his poetry but his plays as well. Also e e cummings.

I like poems that make me shiver. Shaving poetry -- stuff that'll make your hair stand on end while you think of it. The Song of Amergin does this for me, for example. There are others :)

I like poems that make me see reality in a different light. Clive Barker once wrote that fantasy comes in three genres: something alien appearing and being repelled (eg the movie Aliens); something alien appearing and being absorbed (eg Superman); and reality being shown to be different to what we thought (eg The Matrix). Haiku, to me, often does the third so nicely.

what I like.......

strong imagery...intelligent words that flow over the tip of your tongue like honey....like dance...

and honestly....I do like rhyme....when it works...rhyme isn't easy....but when it is pulled off....it amazes me.

I like a simple thought expanded..... one flash of feeling expanded

I want the cadence of the poetry to move within the word choice

I want to recognize the author.....

creativity...within structure......stylized chaos.

I want to tingle when I read your poem

Read daughter's chocolate afflicted....you'll get what I'm sayin'

read any haiku by garyblue....damn he's brilliant
