Does anyone care about A-rod taking steroids?? Doesn't Congress have more important things to do?? Aren't you sick of congressman and senators trying to regulate baseball??

--------------------------------------------

Alex Rodriguez soon might have to repeat his steroid admission on Capitol Hill.

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) plans to recommend to the head of the congressional committee that has previously hosted baseball players that A-Rod receive an invite to testify about his steroid use, Cummings told Newsday last night.

"I think we're going to have to see what Rodriguez will tell us," Cummings said in a phone interview.

"He is in a confessing mode, so maybe he needs to put his apology into some meaningful action by cooperating with the committee so we can see if there are things we need to reopen to make sure baseball is doing all that it can to rid itself of this kind of practice."

As a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Cummings has come down hard on players accused of steroid use. He grilled Mark McGwire at the 2005 hearing, and a year ago he told Roger Clemens, "It's hard to believe you, sir. It's hard to say that. You're one of my heroes. But it's hard to believe you."

I always wondered what Congress had to do with this issue also.

Yeah, me too, and I agree with the OP. Wtf is Congress for? Surely there's something more important for them to focus on?

Not to play some sort of partisan card or anything--seriously, I'd ask the same question no matter who it was--but is this all a result of Bush mentioning it in that SOTU speech?

I'm not all that concerned with his situation, but my Hump bought the New York Post with A-HOLE above his face on the cover yesterday. Strictly for goofing on one of his Yankee-loving pals, heh.

Did see him hand Madonna a bottle of water during her concert Thanksgiving Eve. But unfortunately for her, HE's NO JOE DIMAGGIO no matter how hard she tries to impress Marilyn Monroe.

Marilyn was always overrated....

If you can use drugs and be president, then you can use drugs and swim or play baseball.

But just to put it into perspective, Bush and Laura were railed against here on these boards on almost a daily basis for having drank in their youth...

I gave up on baseball years ago since that bats, the balls, and the players were all juiced to get more home runs (hell, the outfield was even "dumbed down" by bringing the walls closer) because attandance was dwindling.

OH! Gawd, Allah, Jesus and all the Buddhas in the heavens, if they were JUST focused on issues such as this...

Congress makes laws.

Anabolic Steroids are illegal according to federal law. See: The Federal anabolic steroid control act passed in 2004, an update to an act of the same name passed in 1990.

This isn't just an issue that sports leagues have to deal with.

Run! A-ROD, RUN!!!

(Steal, A-Rod, steal!!!)

Congress granted MLB an exemption from anti-trust laws years ago. That's one of the reasons they are involved in baseball and not the WWF.

This always comes up and the answer is always the same...
Steroids: Legal issue.
Baseball: Has to answer to Congress due to whatever act that was they passed forever ago.

The US Congress allows Major League Baseball to operate as a MONOPOLY. So MLB - not the Players' "Union" but MLB itself - is very cooperative when called upon by their benefactor.
