A Rant about Feedback

Personally, I'd like to thank the Canadians for doing their part in population management. The condoms must be really working up there! ;) A warm fire, a mug of something steamy and a hot romp beneath the comforter on a long, long, long winters night.:D Who needs porn, ahem, I mean erotica?

We do know how to show a lady a good time up here without sending her home pregnant. We are a land of goose down warmth, maple smoke fires, and hot apple cider spiked with Canadian whiskey. Come snuggle with me Honey and get a taste of good Canadian hospitality, and lovin'

hmmmm canada...

hmmmm, when you put it that way, canada sounds absolutely lovely, but then i remember that your country is responsible for nickelback and i cry myself to sleep for you.

warm me up canadians!

Wow Lance,
Where do you live and when can I visit? lol. Canada is an amazingly beautiful country with super friendly people. I visit up there every chance I get. Victoria/BC are gorgeous! And wow are the men beautiful. Although, I will take a warm fire, some good whiskey, Nickleback playing in the background, and a super hot Canadian beside me anyday! HOT HOT HOT!

Well, aren't you a Darlin' girl. I'll gladly let you snuggle up under the goose down and pour some whiskey for us. If there's one thing Canadian men know, it's treating a woman to a good time in and out of bed. So, tell me how you like your lovin'.

Here he is again - Mr Anonymous, semi-literate, language-fascist:

"only idiots on a rock and a couple other small locations use "arse" but for 90% of the world its just "ass".

Yes, that's all there is. I wrote 7,000 plus words over a few days. He succinctly responded to them with the above, taking about two minutes max. to compose it, I'd guess. He's hardly making a case for what he supposes is the superiority of American English.

I think he deserves a thread all to himself.

Just reassure (and amuse) yourself with the image of this grand genius sitting at the single diner in his run-down little town, never having left it in his life nor learned a whit about anything else in the Great Wide World, pluming himself on his brilliance and lecturing the tired and bored-looking waitress about the "proper" use of a language his country didn't invent and his mind doesn't comprehend.

Ah, God bless him - the most clever thing he'll do today is demonstrate that he doesn't understand English conventions of spelling or grammar, nor indeed the American rule on use of spelling and slang when writing dialect and local color. His flights of oratory will be outshone by the menu's description of their scrambled eggs.

Always a pleasure to cross paths, Mlle. I hope you are not troubled by any trolls on yours.

I've had the nicest gentlement sending me PMs and feedback about my stiletto story. I'm really amazed. The worse comment I had was when Boxlicker told me I spelled a word wrong. I was so embarrassed and went in and made a correction. Then the was the story that I changed somebody's name halfway through it. Somebody picked up on that one, too. So, if I get bad feedback, I deserve it.

In another thread - Useful Feeedback - I've recently thanked a commenter for posting constructive criticism on one of my stories - and I really do appreciate his/her thoughts. But now, I'm afraid, we're back in the old routine. Right on cue, Mr (?) Anonymous Language Fascist has favoured me, again, with this:

' out of touch

The author is out of step/touch with terms the world commonly uses; such as just "ass" not ""arse" needs to learn and use international style terms.'

As I've pointed out before, not only is this officiously condescending person a bigot, but s/he (probably he, I think) can't even string a completely coherent sentence together.

Does 'international' really equal American? I don't think so.

That's a fairly common complaint from authors who don't write American :p

At least this one acknowledges that they're real words. About half of them post things like "WTF is an arse? Lern to spell dumass!"

The only time I find arse or similar locally common terms out of place is when one just pops up out of the blue when there's been no indication of them up to that point. When the newcomer bad-boy from New York is checking out the homegrown Iowa University lead cheerleader's arse, I make the Tim Allen sound. *laugh*

I did not realise that the use of (') or (") was such an issue. I just always attributed it to how you were individually taught. At college we were guided to using " for speach and ' for highlighting and thought. But to make such an issue of it in feedback is pointless.

Dumass? Weren't he the fella that wrote that Count of Monty Crisco story?

(My apologies to Stephen King for budgering his Shawshank line, but I couldn't pass it by)

I was taught the same. American English. If the editor that reviewed the story for publication did not have a problem with it, I don't think anonymous should have his critique honored with placement at the end of the story.
