Ok i don`t know much about the military but i guess you people can help me.

I`d like to know what exactly happens when someone becomes a Marine. You know the basic training and how hard it is to stay one.

These questions stem from the fact that Randy Orton is an ex Marine...he went AWOL for 82 days and decided to go back and was given a 2nd chance, only to sleep in and disobey orders.

I`m kinda curious about this:)

i'm not a marine, and can't really answer your question. sorry.

i am, however, a wwe fan and wonder if the marine story is a work or a shoot. do you know?

I wasn't in the Marines either, but the ones I know are pretty hard core guys.

I am ex-military, I served for 10 years in the Royal Navy, and spent some time working in a specialist unit of Royal Marines.

What I can tell you about basic trainining for Marines, is that it is tough, really tough. Its not just the physical stuff that is tough though (although you reach a peak of physical fitness that you wouldnt believe), its mentally tough and incredibly challenging.

I know when I earned the right to wear a green beret, it was one of the most satisfying days of my life.

However, one of the primary concepts is not just being able to think laterally and overcome a particular situation, it is being able to carry out the orders of your superiors. If you dont, then lives could be lost. Going AWOL for 82 days is not something which is easily or lightly forgiven.

In all likelyhood if he had done so, he would have spent some time undergoing one form of punishment regimen or another. To be welcomed back like the prodigal son, and given a second chance, without any punishment going along with it is so unlikely as to be totally unbelievable.

Like with a lot of WWE storylines, this one is almost certainly untrue. I dont doubt he was a marine, that would be easily confirmed, but going AWOL for 82 days and getting away with it.... Nahh !

Rent the movie "Full Metal Jacket". The first half of the movie is about basic training. The Marines I know said it is as close as a movie has come to capturing boot camp.

I'm AF not Marines but I know my BMT was hellecious enough. I've got friends that are Marines- from thier stories, I want nothing to do with thier BMT.

There is a huge amount of pride in that last day at BMT though, marching across a parade field, family and friends watching on as you're admited as a real member into the service, where before you were just a trainee/recruit/etc.
Passing in review, under the eyes of the men and women who've taken you from slobby, "pansy" civies and turned you into someone the military calls its own.

I may not always like the AF but I'll support it along with the rest of my brothers and sisters in arms.

Anyone deserting- that's cowardly! And its a federal offense. There is no "oh, bad boy, slap on the hand" answer for that. And there shouldn't be! There are pleanty of easy-outs of the military. From conciencious(sp) objector to getting pregnant, there are ways out.

I know from experiance a REAL Marine wouldn't behave like that. There's a connection between them, one forged of blood and sweat, trust and espirt de corps that I haven't seen duplicated in the other US services.
Staying a Marine means passing your physical tests, making your promotions, and not screwing up.
I've a friend that's a Marine who was injured in Iraq. More then anything in the world, he wants to go back there, to be with his unit again. They're closer then his family to him. He would give anything to be able to run alongside them again. That's a real Marine.

One other point against the AWOL part of the story -- It's impossible to be AWOL for more than 30 consecutive days; On the 31st day you're no longer AWOL, you're a Deserter.

AWOL is the equivalent of a misdemeaner civilian offense; Desertion (even in peacetime) is a felony. In some circumstances, Desertion is a Capital Offense, worth a life sentence in a Federal Penitentary or the Death Sentence.

I can virtually guarantee that he wasn't AWOL for 82 consecutive days -- he might have gone AWOL several time for a total of 82 days, but that would make him a chronic offender and earn him a dishonarable discharge -- in which case the adage "once a Marine, Always a Marine," wouldn't apply, because Marines tend to disown (rather violently and emphatically at times) someone who continues to call himself a Marine after "dishonoring the Corps" with a DD.

I don't have a great deal of confidence in the absolute accuracy of a WWE bio for any of it's performers. There might be a grain of Truth in one or two of them, but I wouldn't bet on it.

maryhall...

he may indeed have been in the marines and he may have gone AWOL and all that other stuff. but something in my gut tells me that at least some of the story has been tweaked by the wwe creative team to mold his character.

i could be totally wrong about this and it may in fact be a shoot. where did you read about his military career?

if you're interested in really finding out all the truth and backstage/off camera stuff, i'd recommend going to www.PWInsider.com

the site is owned and operated by a guy named dave sherer who has lots of sources inside the business. they have a Q&A section every day... that may be a good place to submit your question. they're great guys and a great site if you want to know what's really going on with injuries, storylines, etc.

Having done 8 1/2 Years in the Navy I'm by no means an Expert on the Marines, but being the guy that Gave them E-Mail while underway i can say I’ve know quite a few. Even went out and had beers with a few several times. so I know as much of them as an Outsider could.

Navy Law and Marine law are essentially the Same only minor differences. As a matter of fact Mariens dont have a Legal Section they use the same as the Navy. Now before this squid pisses any Jarheads off I’d like to add the Joint parts of the Department of the Navy and it’s Marine Branch are only ADIMINISTRATIVE. however BOTH Follow the UCMJ (Uniformed Code of Military Justice) and Brainy Marines will quote it.

First of all BMT (Basic Military Training) for marines is more then Physical conditioning it's mental Conditioning. They are Taught to Take Commands and Obey Orders. We have all seen “A Few Good Men”. You need to differentiate between an order and a command.

Command, “Shot that.” “Go there” “Duck.” “Run” “retreat”

Order, “Secure that Location and Report back.”
“Get your Unit Ready”

Now a any Marine wouldn’t question a Command. Most would only question an Order if it was Bluntly against the CORE Values, Or the UCMJ (THE rule book.) and even then if told by a superior do it anyway 99% of the time it would be done.

That’s what set’s Most Marines apart. The times when you give up your thinking to your Unit commander. Low ranking Marines can have even lower raking Marines below them. In hazardous Situation this person would essentially be given control over their lives. The higher the Rank the less likely you’ll question, the closer the relationship the less likely you’ll question. All this requires levels of trust normal people don’t understand. This allows other marines to place trust in ones they have never meet or put their live in the hand of people because the know a mutual Friend.

To a marine the only thing worse then a Non-marine is a Bad marine Imagin how the above would work with no trust. So if you are a bad marine you’re not going to advertise it. If there were pictures of him before in uniform odds are he served a good term and the Producers thought it would do better to make him a bad boy. And altered the real story. Or he had really really good excuse.

UA for 24 hours (Unauthorized absence) is enough to lose a career over. 29 Days UA 99.9% of the time will get you at least 60 /60 (may be 45 /45 depending on the one dealing the punishment) Days of Jail and extra duty (think Chain Gang) and lose ½ to ¾ your pay during the time. With no pay during UA of course. Now unless you’ve got a Really Really good excuse, nothing less then ‘Deliverance*’ or a Wife or child on a deathbed, your Screwed. Go over 31, Deserter and not only are you no longer a Marine you are a Felon. And I’ll conform the previous statement in wartime, it is a capital Offence. Peace time Months or years in prison depending on your Lawyer and/or circumstances.

Hope this sheds a bit of light on the subject.

*I’m referring to you being butt raped by Hill Billies and left for dead in the forest.

P.S. AWOL is Absent with out Leave. Leave is the military equivalent of Vacation time. So AWOL applies to anytime your to be at work and aren’t. UA means the same thing unauthorized absence.

My Pop up blocked Counter went up like a Clock and the 'Would you like to intall" window came up 3 times. I wouldn't recomend going to this sight.

"Rent the movie "Full Metal Jacket". The first half of the movie is about basic training. The Marines I know said it is as close as a movie has come to capturing boot camp."

I’ve heard the same thing with only two differences. One they don't get away with hitting you like they did before. Not saying it don't happen. Saying it's not as frequent. 2 Women have softened it up a bit so no swearing either. Another one too. GI-Jane though SEAL is close I hear too.

I can't say much because other then Sleep Deprivation Navy Boot came is like 6th grade camp with Boots in sub Zero weather (all in great lakes) and a bit more exercise.

Now here are some movie Recomendations i have for understanding what it means to be in the Military.

Taking Honor Courage and Commitment to heart and living by them.

for “Theme only” there are a lot of Movies that Display the Feelings of Brothers in Arms. One good one is Wolfgang Peterson’s Das Boot (the Boat). It’s about Nazi’s in a U-boat but the Brotherhood and Trust are very much universal. Watch everyone’s response to the Chief Engineer when he messes up. 19 Faithful Tours and the Captain had to seriously consider him after one mistake. And you’ll question it too. That moment there will make my point. Commitment Das Boot

I suggest Antonio Bandares in 13 Warrior. To Risk, no not risk, to GIVE ones life and Limb for in a hopeless situations just because it’s right is a good display of Honor. These are the Values that can help you understand.
Honor 13 Warrior

Now for Courage I’m going to go left Field here. Go watch the Foreign Film Called Spirited Away. If you watch that a Little Girl will teach you what Courage is.
Courage Spirited Away.

Hope this will lead you to understanding.

Living for Honor, Courage and Commitment is what it means to be Solder. A Warrior, A Marine, A Ranger, A Seal, A Hero,

Now why the hell did I join the Navy?

Oh ya the Foreign bars and all we ever have to fight with are buttons.

Oh ya one more. For a good love story with some awesome bondage and Latex Go see "Fastionista" some nice spanking in that too. I recommend for anyone that likes butts.

yeah, the popups are a bitch, to say the least. the blocker is definitely in order for viewing the site. but that's how they pay for their time/effort. if you have a blocker on though, it's a breeze to surf through and well worth it if you want the inside info.

Aaron... u think bootcamp was silly when you went thru? my husband and i were just up at 'great mistakes' for 3 years... my husband hits his 8 year mark the end of this month, and he said that it changed completely from the time that he went thru bootcamp till now. {i dont know, i didnt know him when he went thru-- i was stil in high school}

hes now off to serve our country in the middle east :( yuck

we certainly thank you both for serving the country. he, along with all our other service men and women will be in my thoughts.

Full Metal Jacket is an accurate reflection of how the Corps used to be... If you want a VERY good idea of how boot is now, I would suggest reading a book called 'Making the Corps' by Thomas E. Ricks. Gives a very matter of fact look at a class of recruits going through boot at Parris Island and a good behind the scenes description of why things are done the way they are. Great read.
