I posted this once before, but that was right around when the forum was being changed, and somehow got deleted *shrug* so here goes again.

Is it acceptable to write stories about fictional characters who are under 18 (e.g., Lizzie McGuire) if when the story takes place, they are of age? Also, I know of (at least) one story on Lit that involves a real person who is currently 14 years old, but the character gave her a magic pill that made her 18. Is this okay? Or rather, fast-forwarding to the future when said persons are over 18? (Frinstance, Jane is 14 in 2005. If my story takes place in 2010, she will be 19. Is this acceptable?)

Just inquiring...

Best,

Good question.

The only thing I can suggest is that you PM (not email) Laurel, and ask her. I would venture to say it probably wouldn't make it through acceptance, but I could be wrong.

I had this question asked of me just the other day and the writer PMed Laurel to make sure and the answer he got was:

I can only say that it would depend on the scene. If the character is simply mentioning to someone else what happened and doesn't give too much detail, it would probably be fine. If it's a graphic flashback scene, it would probably be rejected.

The blue bits above are the wording I changed from the original reply my writer got.
