A Question About Satellite Radio

I'm writing a story that features a satellite radio talk show host (like Howard Stern) as the main character. Now, I've never heard talk shows on networks like Sirius, but my understanding is that it's like cable; because it's a subscribed venue, the programs can get as raunchy as they want.

Am I right about this? Could my character have free reign to say whatever he wanted, liberally peppering his speech with 'colorful metaphors?' Or are there still some limits on what can be said?

I have heard Howard Stern on sirius ... he says fuck a lot. And a few other 'colourful metaphors' :p

He's American. Those "colorful metapors" would be "u" less. :cathappy:

So . . . my character would be able to use 'fuck,' 'asshole,' and 'cunt,' pretty freely?

It's not central to the story, except insofar as to help illustrate what an irreverent bastard he is . . . .

Yes, there is a really funny comedy channel on XM that gets pretty crude sometimes.

From the mouths of Fools . . . ;)

Thanks. And thanks to you, Geeky. That's all I needed to hear.

Well fine, if that's all you need to hear. :p But I say write it like satellite radio is the wild west and anything goes! That's why Howard Stern went there. Besides the millions, that is.

Lol. Hey, I can always take more input. I just wanted to make sure my impression of satellite radio was accurate. :p

I just got a new vehicle that came with 3 months of free XM. I'll spend some time with the baser stations (comedy, I'm sure) and let you know.

Kind of wish I had Sirius to hear how outrageous Stern is. I do think that now you could get away with a lot more since it's in the early stages.

That was my impression as well. Stern got pretty raunchy on his syndicated show, but with Sirius, I figured he could have a porn star dancing naked in his lap and be able to describe exactly what was going on.

I'm not sure if it is still available or not, but XM had a Playboy channel at one time. It was a premium channel for pay radio...go figure....

Well, slyc and Fool, I will do diligent research and report back! :)

Didn't I see that episode on TV?

Oh, that's encouraging. Okay, so no kid gloves on satellite radio. Good.

Maybe . . . I know I saw some vids on YouPorn in which Stern had various porn stars riding the Sybian . . . those were interesting :p

A thought: Hertz(?) advertises satelite radio in selected rental cars at no extra charge; if you can afford to rent a car for a couple of days, you can check out satelite radio for yourself. (It might have been Avis or National that was advertising the Satelite radio but I suspect all three can accomodate you.)

ETA: You can probably find a webcast of the Howard Stern Show on Sirius. Here's his page on sirius' website and Howard's own website

Thanks, Harold. That pretty much cements my idea of what satellite radio is doing these days . . . and I'm glad that my story will fit right in. ;)

I have XM but I never listen to the talk channels.

The metal channel has constant cursing by their three DJs though. No worries at all about any kind of censorship.

Although they had a guest from one of the talk channels that said she wasn't aloud to use "dirty" language on her channel for her sex-based talk show (XMs version of Love Line), which is strange. I don't know what was up with that because there appears to be so much cussing everywhere else on the XM channels it sounded out of place to hear that her show, that should allow the raunchiest of talk, wasn't aloud to use anything outside of FCC regulated words, when the FCC has no jurisdiction in satellite broadcasts.
