There's so much Collective Wisdom(tm) here that I thought it would be a good place to ask. Please forgive me if this is inappropriate.

I have a friend who is doing a project which can basically be considered experimental archeology. It has to do with historic (Viking age) textile production. There's a huge amount of research involved, for which academic access is needful. We think we have that covered. There's also the physical rendering of the project, which requires resources and a whole bunch of person-hours to 'make it so.'

So far, this has all been accomplished on a personal budget, but it's obviously going to exceed what can be fronted Real Damn Soon. So, we're trying to put our heads together to figure out who to ask for some grant funding. I've got experience in actually writing grant applications, but we're trying to find good sources to which we can pass our hats.

If you have any thoughts, they would be HUGELY appreciated.

Thanks muchly. :rose:

It might help if you told us WHERE the project is.

I assume it is based in the continental USA, which doesn't seem a likely place to look for expertise on the Vikings or their textiles.

If the project is based in UK or Europe I might have ideas.

Ooops, that would make a difference! It's based in the US; the growing team is scattered all over.

1. Unless you have a very small amount in mind, and unless you have a short term project, DON'T be impatient, and DON'T be fixated about the actual WAY you are going to get monetary support;

2. Understand what grant money is, and what it generally seeks to achieve and what the so-called 'third' and 'fourth,' etc., lines of advantage and objective are;

3. There's always a 'point three,' but I just don't seem to recall what it is right now... : )

Presumably, you have done preliminary research into what the current knowledge of "historic [Viking age] textile production" is so you won't be duplicating already existing work. Most grantees include an acknowledgement of the grantor who funded their research in their report. I suggest that would be a sterling source for the names of potential grant funding.
