Sarah was sitting at a small table, towards the back of the club, staring at a drink sitting in front of her. Absentmindedly she swirled the fruit covered toothpick around as she thought about how much she wanted to be back at home, curled up on the couch in her pajamas, instead of in a loud club in a tight little black dress. She looked up as her friends voice caught her off guard.

"It's been a year, don't you think it's been long enough? Come on! Get up and dance!" Nora said as she stood up out of her seat "I'm going to have fun..." She said with a sigh as she walked away knowing there was no hope in getting Sarah to join.

It wasn't that she didn't like to have a good time, it just wasn't fun anymore. As she watched the mass of people on the dance floor she wondered if she'd ever be like that again.

David was celebrating with his workmates, after securing the next lucrative contract for his advertising agency. He was standing there talking and laughing with his workmates, having drinks thrust upon him from every direction. This contract was huge, and had secured his position within the company.

Through the crowd he saw a lady, sitting alone, and looking as if she was a million miles away. David excused himself from his colleagues, and made his way over to the table where this lonely girl was sitting. When he arrived at the table, he said, "Sorry, I couldn't help but notice you were miles away. I'm here under protest too. My workmates dragged me here for a celebration. Mind if I join you?"

"Go ahead." She said as she continued to look down at her drink "I'm sure it can't be too bad... Seems like your friends are having a lot of fun." Sarah looked over to where he had come from "So what's the celebration? Birthday? Bachelor party? Break up?" She asked.

David sat down and told her all about the contract he had just secured, and what it meant to the company. After he had finished explaining all about the contract, he said, "Now that I've bored you to tears with all that 'office talk', how about you tell me a bit about you. What's such a pretty young girl like you doing here, all alone?"

"My friend dragged me out. She's somewhere out on the dance floor." She said taking a sip if her drink "I'm not really into this whole thing. I haven't spent a lot of time in a club since I graduated college. So why are you talking to me instead of celebrating with your friends? It doesn't seem like I'm the better choice..."

David laughed as Sarah said, "It doesn't seem like I'm the better choice..." He took a mouthful of his drink, and said "Well, I think you are the better choice than hanging out with that lot. They can be too tightly wound, and yeah they are in a good mood, but they are actually pretty boring outside the office." as he pointed to the office staff.

"I'm David by the way." He said, as picked up her hand and kissed the back of it.

"I'm Sarah..." She sad as she pulled her hand away "I'm not looking for some guy to try an charm me into bed. I'm really not looking for someone at all. I'm sorry. I'm just over the whole idea of falling in love..." She sighed "I really should find my friend before she gets too drunk." She said as she quickly got up.

"Sarah, it's a pretty name, for a pretty girl. And I'm not looking to charm you in to bed, or trying to make you fall in love with me. I'm just a guy, talking to a girl. The worst thing that can happen is we could be friends." David said before Sarah walked away. "Listen, how about we have a dance, or I help you look for your friend? You can't walk around the dance floor alone."

"Well I don't dance so i guess if you want to walk around I really can't stop you." She said as she headed toward the dance floor "she shouldn't be that hard to find. She's probably surrounded by men... I wouldn't be surprised if she left with someone already..."

"Well Miss Sarah, I would be honoured to accompany in your search for your friend." David said as if addressing royalty. He crooked his elbow, offered it to her, and said "Shall we search for your friend together? Oh, by the way, I guess it would help if I knew who I was looking for and what they looked like."

"Um... She's about this tall... Blonde, thin, blue eyes, wearing a gold dress...." She said "her name is Nora." As she spoke she ignored his arm her eyes scanning the crowd "you really don't need to help. I'm sure you're co workers are wondering where you are. It's you're party after all..."

"It might have been me who got the contract, but the party is more for the company. And besides in the 10 minutes we've been talking I've enjoyed myself much more than I've enjoyed the rest of the night." David's eyes scanned the dance floor looking for a gold dress, but couldn't see one, so he started towards the dance floor. "What will you do if she has left already?"

"I'll just catch a cab home, it's not like I wanted to be here tonight anyway." She said "I can't believe she really left me. She was the one who wanted me to come here so badly." Looking around one last time she took a deep breath before going back to her table and downing the rest of her drink before taking out her phone to call a cab.

"Listen, Sarah, why do we go somewhere else, just you and me. Nothing more than friends, enjoying each others company?" David blurted out before she managed to finish calling a cab. "I would really enjoy spending sometime with you somewhere quieter than here."

David drained his drink, putting his empty glass on his table. "What do you say Sarah? Let's go somewhere for a cup of coffee? A movie? A walk on the shorefront? Name it, whatever you want to do that we can do as friends."

Sarah put down her phone "How drunk are you? I don't understand, you can pick any girl in here and she would happily join you for coffee but instead you're cling to me. Why is it that you've chosen my table to join?"

"I'm not drunk, I've had 2 beers. Why you? I saw you sitting there, and there was something about you that drew me to you, something I can't explain. And for the record, I don't want any girl, I want you Sarah. I'll make you a deal. Give me some time tonight, if you don't like me, we'll part ways, but if you do we'll take it one step at a time, and I promise not to rush it. Deal?"

"Fine. One cup of coffee tonight...." She said knowing he wasn't going to leave her alone. "You pick the place."

"Great. One cup of coffee. How about we go to Coffee Class, you know that coffee shop up on the hill, with a view of the town. I know it's the other side of town, but they do have the best coffee, and I think you deserve the best." David grabbed his phone, and dialled a number, spoke briefly, and then said to Sarah, "There will be a car out front in 5 minutes to take us to Coffee Class."

"Alright...but if we're going somewhere thats expensive you're paying." She said as she gathered her phone and purse.

David motioned for Sarah to start making her way outside, as they walked out together David said, "Of course I'm paying, I wouldn't expect you to pay when I asked you to join me."

They walked outside just as the stretch limo was pulling up out front of the club. David urged Sarah towards the limo, and said "I told you I think you deserve the best, and the best is what you are going to get."

David opened the door for Sarah as the driver was making his way around, "After you." He said gesturing with his hand.

"Are you serious?" She asked as she got inside "you know that fancy things aren't going to change my mind? I'm not going to like you because of a fancy car or overpriced coffee. I don't care about things. It's just extravagance." She said looking around "it just makes you seem spoiled..."

"I'm not trying to impress you. I am only trying to give you what I think you deserve. I don't expect you to like me because of any fancy car, or overpriced coffee. I'm hoping you'll like me for me. The car is the company's, I have access to it because of my achievements at work. I live in a modest 3 bedroom house, alone. I work hard, sometimes it feels like I live at work. But I do appreciate nice things, like a good wine, a nice movie, maybe some nice wines. But I am just your average Joe. So as an off the wall question, what would it take for you to like me?" David asked as the car cruised through town, headed for Coffee Class.

Shrugging she turned away from him "I don't know... To be honest I'm not sure if I can. I have no idea if I can do the whole falling in love thing again." She said "I wouldn't call a three bedroom house modest. A small one bedroom apartment is modest..."

"It's modest compared to some of the houses that so many executives live in." David said defensively, "And I am not asking you to love me. I am only looking for a friend. If we like each other, well we will take it one step at a time, and if we are destined to be a couple, then we will cross that bridge when we come to it, if not, then I could certainly handle being friends with you. I'm not asking for your hand in marriage, well not yet, and I'm certainly not going to charm you out of your panties tonight, but does it hurt to have a friend? Someone you can just pick up the phone and say 'Hi, how are you?' or 'Do you want to catch a movie tonight?'"

"Okay... Why should I be friends with you? What are your selling points?" She asked "what makes you a quality friend with boyfriend potential? What is it that makes you so special?"
