Does anyone else think there should be a separate category for threesomes?

They just don't seem to fit into Group Sex to me. Group sex strikes me as being gangbangs and orgies and such. If three-ways had their own category, people who like to read that type of story wouldn't have to weed through the orgies.

Yep, I agree!

However, I do have two stories here involving threesomes, but neither of them are in Group Sex. One is in non-consent, the other in BDSM. They just fit better into those categories than they did Group Sex - as they weren't gangbangs or orgies, but much more "intimate". Both pretty hardcore categories, though, so nobody has ever complained about there being two men very much taking advantage of a woman.

Whenever you consider adding a category, you have to consider demand. As it is, many stories could cross cats, with each one you add, it becomes more likely stories could cross that one too.

For example. if you have a white girl and 2 black guys is it a threesome or interracial? What if it's three women? Les sex, interracial, groupsex? If the two black characters are related does that make it incest? If the white character is stoned are we talking mind control? or even n/c? If she takes a Dp is it anal?

I think most folks who want a threesome story know to go to group sex as the most likely cat. Certainly if there is a significant portion of readers who just want three participants there could be a cat, but there has to be significant demand or an extra category just gums up the works.

Speaking of categories...how do you decide which one of the categories a story belongs to the most when it has aspects of several kinks?

I'm having the same problem with my current project, that goes lesbian, straight, gay, interracial, mature, anal, first time, possibly incest and non-con too before I'm done with it.

So what did I do? I gave up and decided to fluff it up enough to pass as a novel.

My latest picked up a bad PC because the person thought it was in the wrong cat. For me the main theme was lesbian, but to this person there were enough elements of N/C to make it distasteful. So what do you do? It isn't nearly hard enough for the N/C crowd.

You place a story in the cat you feel describes the main theme best. Each new category will further blurr the lines on some, while possibly giving an author a venue he/she feels is more appropriate to the story's theme.

The cats should be broad, or you end up with a gazillion narrow cats with 10 stories in half of them.

Maybe there should be some sort of "anything goes" category for those stories that have it all. Actually, I think the incest category to some degree, is already like that.

That way you can have a sort of ebay system like when it has eg DVD [insert incest] and then either horror, romance, comedy, drama genre [insert non-consent, mind-control, romance, anal etc].

Just a suggestion.

But I agree with Colly, you have to keep the categories as broad as possible, otherwise you have a tree, and still have the same problems of finding the stories you want.

I think I'd put that one in the category with the most hits in the list of codes -- BDSM.

Incest seems to be a big part of the story too, so that's a possibility.

There are two good rules of thumb about selecting a category:

1: What is the main theme? If it's a family that is into experimentation, then it's incest no matter how many kinks they expore. If it's mainly about the BDSM adventures a family indulges in, then it's BDSM.

2: When in doubt, choose the category with the highest squick factor -- i.e. the kink the most people would object to when it's found in another category.

Incest anywhere outside of the incest category is almost always going to score lower because people who object to incest tend to get upset about encountering it without warning.

Nonconsent can generate a lot of hate mail and low votes when encountered outside of the nonconsent category.

Anything other than light BDSM -- spankings, mild bondage, teasing, etc -- encountered unexpectedly can cause hate mail and low votes.

Gay Male sex is another kink that people generally prefer to be warned about -- but fans of gay male stories don't tend to respond well to MF sex without warning too.

It's a balancing act deciding which part of your story will generate negative feedback against which part is the main theme.
