Concerning Poetry

I think I may have posted a link to a earlier site, once This guy is fantastic, probably has the most reasoned agruments concerning everything, good illustrations of what he is talking about. No Dogma. Check it out, I'm just amazed.

Today's poets are still inward-directed, neglecting what interests the common reader. And they tend to use a language of expression — essentially prose — that was developed for other purposes, and that does not readily serve for what formerly made poetry distinctive.
He could be talking about many of lit's poets. :)
So, what does the common reader want, and do we want to interest the common reader?

surely any reader wants something they can relate to, something that will enlighten them, something that will surprise them.

twelveoone that's a great site! thanks for sharing. :)

Poets must understand the consequences of their diction, which go far beyond getting their work published. Diction shows allegiances, and each of these open up new areas of opportunity as they close down others. If poetry is to be largely "a slice of life", then that poetry needs to defend itself against the stronger claims of films and novels. If poetry is to be something else, then that purpose needs to be thought through, which includes attention to diction.

A great site, 12; thanks for posting it.

Here and here are a couple of poems written by the author, in case anyone wants to know more about him. The first link also provides a very cool shark pic!
